Question about car seats and traveling.

We will be traveling to a wedding. I know that you can rent car seats when you rent a car but I was wondering if anyone has heard of and purchased an inflatable, portable car seat booster seat (sold online at onestepeahead.com)? If so, did you think it was safe used in the rental car or should I just rent one along with the rental car?

thanks!

Re: Question about car seats and traveling.

  • How old is your child? If they're ready for a backless booster, I'd just carry that with me in the plane. I wouldn't trust the rental car company to have appropriate car seats that are in good condition. Are you talking about the bubble bum?

  • Yes, it's the Bubble Bum. I have a 4 yr old and a 2yr old. I know that the 2yr old would be too young for it but I wasn't sure about my 4yr old. I still have my 4yr old in a 3-in-1 convertible car seat since it can be used up to 100lbs. I didn't really want to drag around 2 big and heavy car seats around. I have never had to rent a car and also ask to rent car seats. Have you had a bad experience in the past?
  • I would not use a rental seat because of the cleaning issue that Fred mentioned and because rental companies aren't always aware that seats need replacing even after a minor accident when they were installed but unoccupied, etc. (in fact, many parents aren't even aware of these rules). You just don't know the history of the seat.

As far as the bubble bum is concerned, it's a great seat. My daughter keeps one in her backpack at school in case of emergency pick up (we only have one car, so there are a huge number of vehicles she would ride in, a cab being most likely so keeping a bubble bum in her backpack was our best option) and if we were flying somewhere that's what we would bring. That said,  she is already booster trained and knows how to use a booster safely and reliably does so. I wouldn't want the kid's first time using a booster to be a vacation where they're likely to be overexcited, overtired, overstimulated, etc since a booster is only safe if the child uses it correctly.

I just recently used the BubbleBum for the first time for my 45. year old.  She's still in a 5 point harness in her regular seat, and I prefer it that way.  But she did pretty well with the BB.  I used it becuase we were flying and being picked up and it was just her and me and I didn't want ot have to haul that heavy seat through the airport and I'm glad I did.  While I don't think she's ready for it every day, for something like that it was perfect.
