TTC After a Loss

Antibiotics for HSG?

I never really saw anyone talk about antibiotics for an HSG but I got put on a pretty heavy duty one two days in advance and two days after the procedure. Is this normal? The antibiotics say not to take them if pregnant but I'm assuming if you get pregnant the same cycle it's ok? (not like i'm holding my breath!)

Re: Antibiotics for HSG?

  • It will be fine.  They will give you an antibiotic that can be used during pregnancy.

  • I haven't had mine yet but just wanted to say I hope the results are good.

I've seen people talking about taking ibuprofen for the pain and I'm thinking 'ibuprofen? let's try vicodin.' LOL

  • My doc prescribed them, but I didn't take them due to the fact that I was recovering from some serious food poisoning (and antibotics are NOT recommended, and in fact can make food poisoning worse).  And I ended up just fine Big Smile

  • My RE prescribed antibiotics for my HSG - a few days before and I think 5 days afterward. It's preventative to ward off infection since they will be putting stuff in your uterus and a uterine infection can be very dangerous.

The ones I was on were not pregnancy safe but it doesn't really matter - the HSG is performed early enough in your cycle and the abx are out of your system long before you'd get a positive.

Yup, I think it's pretty standard.  I had to take one the morning of the procedure but that was it.  Nothing for after.  Oh, and don't forget to take some pain meds.  GL!
