So what I learned from my sons birth was to be flexible with your birth plans. I woke up at 4 :40 in the morning on may 6th to a feeling like a pop in my belly. I was 40w 3d. I thought that baby had just kicked really hard. When I went to the bathroom to pee I felt a rush of water. It was greenish brown. We packed up and went straight to the hospital and they verified that I had merconium in my fluid. I was only 3 cm dilated so they wanted me to wait a little bit for my epidural. I started having irregular contractions. They didn't start to get painful until around noon, and I finally got my epidural put in. I must say that the epidural was the part I was mst scared of. My husband was required to step out an th nurse held my hand. Surprisingly it was not bad, and this is coming from a person with a very low pain tolerance. The numbin shot stung for a sec, but the actual needle didn't really hurt. And the relief it brought from the contractions was amazing. My pelvic exam prior to the epidural was very uncomfortable because I had a very high cervix, but I barely even felt pressure when they did one afterwards. At about 1 they gave me a small dose of pitocin to get things moving. At 2 pm my nurse came in with a concerned look. She said the baby's heart rate had spiked and wasn't coming down and that iI needed to have a c section immediately. This was the one thing I absolutely wanted to avoid, but you have no option when your baby's life is at stake. By 2:59 pm by little man was here. I had a small meltdown while being prepped for the c section, but eventually calmed down. They pretty much just up your epidural dose and add a little morphin type product to it. I felt nothing. I didn't even know they had started and my husband informed me that he was almost out already. Unfortunately when he came out he had ingested and breathed in a ton of merconium. He was taken straight to the nicu and had his stomach pumped and lungs suctioned. He officially had merconium aspiration syndrome. He looked awful with all the cords on him. He was in the nicu for 10 days on antibiotics and waiting to see if his lungs would clear. He finally came home on may 16th. That was the longest 10 days ever diving back and forth to the hospital every 4 hours. Thank goodness he is now doing fine. I was in the hospital for 4 days. The recovery from the c section was much better than I expected. I think having to get up and go back and forth to the nicu actually helped me get better quicker. Overall I learned that you need to plan for any situation because things may definitely not go the way you expected. Fortunately things still worked out for the best in the end. I feel fine now and maxwell Lucas Seamon is home with us after making a heck of an entrance at 9 lbs, 22 in, and giving us a good scare.

Congratulations on your baby!
My son spent a week in the NICU after his birth (meconium was present & he & I developed fevers - he was born at 38.5 weeks). Just wanted to let you know that he is a very healthy & happy toddler. Only 1-2 normal colds & no respiratory infections/issues yet. (this was something I was terrified about the mec).
