Cloth Diapering

Cloth diapers are bulky!

I just ran a CD trial on my boy when he was about 7 weeks/11 lbs. All the diapers were just huge on him. I tried a bunch of OS fitteds, pockets, and AIOs. Will he grow into them? He wouldn't be able to wear any of his clothes with the CDs at this point!

  • Yes, he will grow into them. At 11 lbs the OS fit but are very bulky. They go up to toddler size so he will grow into them.

  • Yep, they get less bulky as they get older.  There's barely a difference in size on my boys now in pockets.

  • My girls just hit 8 weeks. We're still using NB AIOs. We've tried our OS stash and we're just not quite there yet, even though we're outgrowing the absorbency of the NBs. Your baby probably just needs to grow into them.

They are a bit more substantial than disposables, but 11 lbs is still pretty small for a OS.  We usually size up in clothes, especially pajamas.

  • Yes, CDs can be bulky. (Some are trimmer than others.) Yes, LO will grow into OS diapers. A diaper that is used for a NB and a toddler will obviously be bulkier on the smaller child. And the intent of OS diapers is for you to be able to do that.

Yes, LO can still wear clothes with CDs, but you might need to size up. For example, J. generally wears 18m pants when in a CD. But when he isn't wearing one 12m pants often work better.

  • Yes,they grow into them. BG used to be so huge on DS and now fit him like a disposable would.

I preferred thinner diapers when he was younger, I liked (and still do) Drybeez and Fuzzibunz fit him very well when he was small.

And he does wear 1 size up in pants/shorts, generally. Just how it rolls with CDs, I think.

  • Thanks. I don't know why I was so surprised at the bulkiness. I'm going to try again in another few weeks.
  • My LO is 11 lbs and wearing his OS diapers with 0-3 clothing with room to spare. (Some are actually too big still.) We went straight to cloth after using disposables for just the 36 hour hospital stay, so the bulk has just been the norm. I don't think it looks too odd though, really.

  • We haven't had to size up clothes at all for our CDs.  DD2 is still in 9-12 month cloths and things are just fine.  They only thing that may be a problem are pjs, but we use a stretch knit fabric and it covers her bubble butt just fine (no footies for us, she hates them).

Not all OS diapers are the same size.  FB elite, RaR pockets, GV AI2 and AIO are all timmer than BG 4.0s, BB, etc...  Or you could try sized diapers if the bulk really bothers you.  My LO was in NB sized until around 10 weeks and we slowly started putting her in OS.

  • I haven't had a huge problem with the bulk.  My DD is over 3 months and I just washed her 3 - 6 mo size clothing last night.  She still fits into her 0 -3 month pants, pjs, and onsies.  I put her in some 3 -6 month sized pants today and they're huge!
