May 2012 Moms

help me get through these contractions!

Ha-- I laugh at myself now, asking my contractions to come back.

Well, they're definitely back, and they are much more painful than I expected.  I've found bouncing on a yoga ball REALLY helps, and I'm trying to breathe through them, but it's pretty tough.  Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

(also posted on Natural Birth board-- but I'm already second-guessing my earlier commitment to go pain med-free.  Ouch!  And I thought I wasn't that pain-sensitive...)

  • Good Luck!  I hope you have a speedy labor and delivery.

  • You can do it!  The yoga ball didn't work for me, I had to stand up and sway through contractions.  Leaning over the back of a chair/couch helped too.

     Good luck, keep us updated!

  • Last time around standing up and leaning over against the wall really helped me to relax my stomach muscles.    You could try a hot bath or shower also.    Try a few positions to see what feels best for you, the position that feels the best is the right one for you to be in at the time.   Also get DH to massage or rub your back or stomach if you need it.   You can do this, good luck momma.
  • The best advice I can offer: don't brace for the pain. As each contraction comes on, you're probably subconsciously tensing up. It's a natural reaction, but it makes the pain worse. Instead, as you feel each contraction coming on, try to force yourself to relax every muscle in your body. That's what the breathing is for. Just zen out. It will help.

Also, I found music and walking super helpful.  make sure you drink plenty of water, because it's really easy to get dehydrated. Dehydration makes the pain nearly unbearable. I won't lie to you. As you near and hit transition, you are going to think you can't make it. Just remember that you CAN make it. And, delivery is so much easier than labor.

Don't brace for the pain...embrace it, and relax, zenning through each contraction.

  • Take a nice warm bath.. I found side lying in the tub to be one of the more comfortable positions to labor in.

Also, standing beside the bed and leaning forward with the top half of my body (essentially making a 90 degree angle) and rocking my hips side to side or kneeling on the bed with a huge pile of pillows under my chest and hanging forwards over them.

    Good luck!

  • I didn't mean to go med free but I did. I found sitting was the worst position, like pp said standing and leaning on a chair, or counter was the best way for me to get though the contractions. You can do it try to find something to take your mind off labor.  That's why I ended up going natural I stayed home too long trying to get things done for my older sons and by the time we got to the hospital it was too late for drugs.

  • I found that rocking back and forth on my hands and knees helped. I've only had false labor though, but hopefully this will give you some relief.
