Online babysitter sites.

Have any of you ladies used Care.com or Sittercity...or any other online service to locate a babysitter for your children.  I live in a city where I don't know anyone (even though I've been here 2 years, I've just been a sheltered SAHM those 2 years...lol) so I'm thinking about using one of these sites to find a sitter for my boys.  I don't want to be sheltered anymore.  I just want to be able to get out and get my hair done, get a mani/pedi....shop without having to take 2 young children (especially DS1 who has taken up screaming the whole way through the store).  Maybe an hour or two of me time a week and/or an actual date night for DH and I...lol.

Anyway...if anyone has used the online services what was your experience like?  I just don't know if I should go the online route or put an ad in the newspaper...or more likely one of the 5 local college's newspapers.

Open to opinions and advice.

  • We found our sitter through care.com.  She's great!  I put an ad on there and got probably 10 or so responses.  She was actually the first one we interviewed and ended up going with her.

Well it makes me especially hopeful that another Pittsburgh mommy had good luck with care.com

  • We also used Care.com - I didn't put an ad up though I searched through the nannies already listed. We talked to 2 online/phone interviewed 1 in person (3x) and she's been with us ever since.

    We LOVE her.

  • I have no idea about care.com or sittercity.com, but I do have a suggestion re:college students.  Rather than putting an ad in the college paper, try contacting career services at the colleges.  Many times, when I was in college, I would get calls from the office because I was looking for part time work and was getting a degree in Early Childhood/Childhood Education. I ended up with a couple of great baby-sitting gigs-one that was steady and the other for things just as you described. I know friends of mine that had great experiences as well.  A bonus: depending on the state in which you live, in order for teacher candidates to be in a classroom for practical experiences, they have been fingerprinted and background checked by the state.
