I only text (and it's only response) when DH asks me a question that I need to answer. Otherwise, I try not to text at all when I drive.

I only text when stopped.  That sometimes means someone will ask me a question and get the first half of the response at one stoplight and the rest at the next stoplight 5 minutes later!

I do this too. But I can text without looking (old-style phone with T9 messaging), so I often finish my text without looking while I drive.

ETA: But I admit that that is still somewhat distracting, so I limit how much I do that.

  • I answered 'No, it's illegal here' but I didn't text and drive even before the law was passed. The main thoroughfare here is also the local university students' road out of town and I see accidents way too often where inexperienced + texting drivers have plowed into guard rails and tumbled down embankments.

My big problem is that since cutting off satellite radio, I've been using Pandora through my phone so have to play with my phone to change the station or skip a song.

My husband is a cop...so if I even look at my phone in the car I get a lecture.

    I rarely do it.

    An interesting point though:

It's illegal to text and drive here, but I heard on the radio that they recently did a study and discovered that texting-related accidents have increased over 30% since the law was passed. It's because people used to hold their phones up (like held them on top of the steering wheel) while texting. Now that it's illegal, they hold their phones down in their laps so they won't be so conspicuous while texting. It has caused them to have more accidents because their eyes aren't even remotely close to looking at the road like they were before. I'm not sure why these laws even exist. We have reckless driving laws and texting should fall under that; why make a separate law?

Not while I'm driving, but every once in awhile, I'll send a text while I'm sitting at a red light.

This. And really, only if it is important.

  • I only text when stopped, such as in a traffic jam where traffic is at a stand still, and that is only to tell my boss that I will be late. I have the message pre-programmed in my phone ("Traffic jam, be there when I can) so it is a 2 second procedure. I carpool most days though so my passenger will do it instead in that case.
