Anyone ever have this with their LO?

So I was gonna call the doc but changed my mind for now since he seems to be doing a bit better....

So LO has had a bit of congestion for the past couple of weeks that we think is due to allergies (no fever or other symptoms). We use saline drops and the nose frida to suck out the snot (rofl). This morning he was a little stuffy and I put him down for a nap..... about 40 mins later he wakes up crying hard, which is unusual for him. I go into his room and he has white stuff coming out of his nose. It appeared it may have been that he spit up through his nose (definitely wasn't boogers)...... then he sneezed and a bunch more came out and he cried harder. I finially got him to calm down, steamed up the bathroom, and sat with him in there for 10 mins...which seemed to help. But the crazy amount of white crap coming out of his nose freaked me out...anyone else have this?

  • I've heard of that happening before (spit-up from the nose). I guess if you can make it happen with milk or soda, why not spit-up? I bet it would be uncomfortable though, since it would have stomach enzymes and all in it.

By the way, we thought DS had some pollen allergies too and the pedi told us that it's very rare to develop seasonal allergies the first year of life, and most likely it was just leftover congestion from a mild virus.

  • It probably is spit up.  I've had it happen with my daughters.  Your lo might have had a little tickle cough and it caused the spit up to come up through his/her nose.  Like it gagged him or her. As far as the congestion and boogers goes, my DD has had two bouts of respiratory infection that seem to last forever.  The first time my pedi finally gave her amoxicillin for a presumed sinus infection.  Once that seemed to clear up (she still sneezed daily and dry coughed in the mornings a little), she came down with a new virus.  She is over the fever and boogie eyes, but is still sneezing and coughing.  You might want to have the pedi check out the baby's ears, throat and lungs just to make sure all is clear, but I wouldn't worry about the spit up through the nose.

  • Yes Gabbi does it all time. She even does it with solids. I found sweet potatoes in there the other day! It happened because she was so tired after she ate and took a nap. She has bad reflux so she spit up the sweet potatoes and in haled and the went up her nose. She didn't like that feeling. She was crying and sounded congested when we suctioned her nose out we didn't get boogers but sweet potatoes at first we though they were bloody boogers but upon examination they weren't

  • I do agree that it may have just been milk mixed with some flem, and it sounds like it may have been painful coming out. Poor little guy!

My pedi says that if these type of symptoms have lasted for longer that 2 weeks, LO needs to be seen. My LO had 2 ear infections that came on after being congested for 2+ weeks. Also, try elevating the crib mattress by stuffing a towel or two under the mattress. This will help with the congestion/runny nose.

  • Hasn't happened lately but my youngest used to spit up through her nose all the time!  It was so scary and I felt so bad for her.

  • My LO used to constantly spit up so much that it come out his nose! It sounds/looks painful. I wouldn't be too worried though as long as it isn't a continuous thing.
