3rd Trimester

Traveling 3 weeks before the due date

My boyfriend and I have a very close friend that is getting married exactly 3 weeks before the due date. I am having a really hard time deciding if we should go or not. its about a 5 hour drive away.

any advice?

    Ask your doctor.

FWIW, my doctor doesn't want me going more than an hour away, and after going to the ER for contractions on Sunday night I'm not going to question that.  You're also probably going to be very uncomfortable at that point, and a 5 hour ride will feel like the seven circles of Hell.

  • I'm currently 37 weeks and based on how "close" I'm feeling, I would be a nervous wreck traveling that far.  If you had asked me a few weeks ago I probably woudl have had a different answer.  I wouldn't

  • Ask your OB.  Mine wouldn't be okay with that.  With DS and DD, 36 weeks was the cutoff - they didn't want me more than an hour away at that point.

I have two friends who had their first at 37 weeks.  Think of it this way - would you want to deliver in the town 5 hours away without your doc, and have to travel home with a newborn?  If not, I wouldn't risk it.  I would be okay with your SO going, however - if something happened he'd likely have plenty of time to get home.

  • Personally I wouldn't (and am not--we have the same situation).  I mean its just as unlikely as it is likely that anything would happen, but for me, peace of mind would be nicer than a wedding.

  • I have a similar situation, although not as far away, and my doc said that she would like to see me before I go anywhere further away than an hour, to be sure that I haven't started dilating. Ask your doctor, and I agree about checking with your insurance. That could be a pretty costly decision if you were to go into labor and deliver out of network.

  • I'm in the same position this coming weekend (about 2 weeks before my EDD) - same distance and same situation, basically. My MWs are really convinced that I won't go into labor early because I'm a FTM and I'm feeling fine, so I'm gonna go for it (I was also supposed to be in the party, but my friend was very understanding about letting me pull out of it, so I feel kind of obligated). I was lucky in the sense that my friend was really understanding and said that if we bailed last minute, she won't be upset (of course, in that case I would've made sure that DH and I sent her the $ that she spent on our food). I also had a hard time deciding, but at this point I'm feeling good physically, so I think we'll take the chance. Good luck with your decision!

  • I traveled 5-6 hours away at 36 weeks and last minute went 4 hours away to visit my BFF that just had her baby boy at 38.5 weeks.  I know I was cutting it close but I've been feeling pretty good and didn't want to regret not going.  I would play it by ear and if you have had an uncomplicated pregnancy then I would go for it.

This exactly.  I would personally not risk it.  My doc said absolutely no traveling after 36 weeks.  i would also not want to sit in the car that long....shoot...my 15 minute drive to work is uncomfortable!!

I agree with this.  I did a 3 hour drive when I was 30 weeks and it was SO uncomfortable.  There is not position that feels comfortable, so it totally sucks.
