Definitely a FTM question

I really want to order something cute off Etsy for baby's "going home" outfit but am clueless on what type of clothes to order.  Virginia can still be and most likely will be really hot when I deliver (EDD is Sep. 6) so will a newborn need a little beanie then or no?  I'm obsessed with the little crochet booties too but I don't want my little man to be sweating up a storm.  Thoughts? I know I sound super ignorant for not knowing this.

  • We took DS home with a little cotton hat on, it was Texas in September and hot.  He was barefoot though.  I just thought he looked cute in the hat.  :)

  • You don't sound ignorant -- it's not an easy choice, IMO.

You'll still want a beanie and feet coverings for inside the hospitals. They're cold places and newborns can't regulate.

Leaving the hospital, you could still do a cotton beanie.

The biggest thing is making sure you don't get any of the sleeper style things that don't have legs. Can't strap them into the carseat with those.

I would do a cotton pant and onesie/kimono top and no shoes, but that's me.

  • I bought a cotton set of pants and a longsleeve kimono style top so she can wear that home.  I didn't get any booties or hats, but will hopefully have a better indicator of the weather when we go in.  Babies have a hard time regulating their temperature right away, so I'd rather have her be a little warm vs. too cold.

  • I live in GA, so it'll be very hot still in September. LO will be coming home in a little romper, cotton beanie and socks. DD was born in August and came home in a onesie, hairband and socks. With the ac on, it'll probably be cool enough for a beanie inside. If you think he'll get too warm, let him wear it in the hospital and at home and take it off for the car ride.

  • Awesome! I think I'll get the booties for the hospital and take them off for the ride home Smile

  • We had a cute going home outfit, but I could bear to put him in it. It just seemed kinda mean to dress him for the first time. He was so happy in his diaper and blanket. Ds came home with a cute hat on swaddled in the blanket my grandma knit before she passed away. It was March in So Cal, so mild weather.

Ok, call me dumb but this is completely baffling me. How does one strap a swaddled baby into a carseat?

  • Even if you bring him home on the hottest day of the year or the coldest day of the year, he'll spend a whopping 6.3 seconds exposed to the elements.

Youre going from an air conditioned hospital to an air conditioned car into an air conditioned house.

You will probably want a hat and foot cover, along with a light blanket.

OMG, this thread is bringing on a mini-panic attack! I have images of myself bringing LO home from the hospital and having basically NO idea what the H3ll I'm doing! If baby is too hot, too cold? Will I know?! A sweaty little baby would freak me out!!! Holy jeebus, I feel like I need to go study some baby books!
