Maybe it's a Generational thing?

I was video chatting with my mom the other day and she made a comment about how DH and I kiss DS on the lips.  She apparently thinks its the most disgusting thing, and made sure I knew it. So it got me thinking, how many of us kiss our babies on the lips? Why or why not?

Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with it.  Obviously once he gets a bit older it would be weird for him so I wouldn't, and I don't kiss him on the lips when I'm sick or what not.  But I really don't see the harm, he's my child and I'm only going to be able to kiss and love on him for so long before he doesn't want my attention.

 Thoughts ladies?

Re: Maybe it's a Generational thing?

  • Totally agree. DH sometimes says "Mom, you're embarrassing him!" But until DS gets to be a little older and I know it is making him uncomfortable, I'm going to love on him however and whenever I want. =)

My husband doesn't kiss him on the lips though he remembers his parents doing it too.  I think he avoids it because he doesn't want to get slobbered on!

This is us too. I always thought it was the opposite thing though, it always seemed to me like the older generations were the ones to kiss babies on the lips. I don't have a problem with it but DS is way too slobbery so I just kiss his cheeks a lot!

This... and I guess I'm weird because I love the slobbery/drool kiss... I figure it's only going to last for so long. DS will grab my face if I stick my lips out in a pucker and totally open mouth drool kiss me...aannnnndddd I love it :) haha

ps. I am also totally paranoid about kissing him on his ears after reading an article about a guy whose ear drum was blown out by someone kissing him on the ear as a baby-- the mouth made a seal on the ear and I guess the suction of the kiss blew his ear drum? craziness.

Aside from that, LO gets kissed all over.  Mainly on those irresistible cheeks, but also on the lips if I'm up for a slobbery kiss!

I kiss him all over his face but not on the lips.  I don't really have a problem with it, but DH thinks it's weird.  My sister kisses her two kids on the lips, and they're so used to it that they go to kiss everyone else on the lips too.  I don't want DS to kiss anyone else on the lips so I don't want to teach him that.

  • I guess I am in the minority. I don't kiss CC on the lips at all , I find it a little disturbing to kiss babies on the lips. Not judging those who do , but it's not my thing at all. I give her plenty of kisses though all over the rest of her face !

  • I kiss him on the lips when he is on his changing table.  Not sure why, as other times I kiss him everywhere else.  He's just so smiley and happy and I can lean down and plant a good one.  He LOVES it.  I have three young brothers (3,6,10)  We always kiss the younger ones on the lips.....not the 10 year old.

  • I do! So does DH. No one's ever made a negative comment about it (that I know of, anyway ). It makes DS giggle so much and I just can't resist. I probably won't do it past toddlerhood because I don't want to embarrass him though.

I kiss him on the lips All the time. I don't think it is weird.  DH kisses his cheeks.  DH also gets bent out of shape when DD kisses DS on the lips.  She is 12 and he says she shouldn't be doing that.  I told him to let it go and not worry about it.  She loves her brother and she can kiss his lips if she wants.  Until he is older, I dont see any harm in it.
  • I think it's really weird. Maybe it's because my parents never kissed us on the lips. DH said his family always kisses babies on the lips. So he doesn't have a problem with it. But I just think it's strange. To me, you only kiss a significant other on the lips.

This. I do the same with DD who is 2. I grew up in a family who rarely showed emotion or gave kisses and DHs family is the exact opposite. They even kiss me. I want my kids to grow up in a lovey type household.

  • Huh.  This is not something I've ever consciously thought about.  That being said, I don't intentionally kiss DS on the lips.  I kiss his cheeks, his necks (love his necks ha ha), his forehead, his nose (God I love kissing his nose), and anything else.  Sometimes, though he'll turn his head and I'll get his lips, but usually his mouth is wide open and I just get a drooly bottom lip and that cracks both of us up.  LOL

This, minus the part about DH. My husband thinks it's weird too. It grosses me out if I get a slobbery mouth kiss when I was aiming for a cheek, nose, etc.

I'm pretty much this! I've never really thought about it one way or the other really. I just LOVE kissing her chubby cheeks, but occasionally she'll turn and I'll get a slobbers all over my mouth! Totally okay though! My family is very affectionate but we never kissed on the mouth. DH's family, well, they're a little "colder", so definitely no mouth-kissing for them.

This. I don't intentionally do it. But it's happened. I'm not against it at this age. Just wasn't raised like that and neither was DH.

I also agree with the PP-I would think kissing babies on the lips would be an older generation thing. Funny.

Add me to the minority on this thread - I don't kiss DD on the lips and I do think it's a little weird.  I'm very affectionate with DD though and kiss all over her face and hands.  Sometimes if she turns her face, I catch her on the mouth, but I never aim for it!

  • This was interesting to think about. I kiss B on the lips all of the time (as well as cheeks, neck, etc).  DH though avoids kissing her on the lips and always goes for the cheek.  We used to joke that she was trying to get him because she'd pull a fast one on him every time he was going for a cheek kiss and turn her head at the last minute.  I think he feels a little weird with it now, but I can't imagine him not giving her smooches on the lips when she's a little older, but who knows.

It's weird though.  My dad still gives me a kiss on the lips with a hug and it's totally normal to me, but I couldn't tell you the last time I kissed or was kissed by my mother. And DH just hugs his parents...
