My family is concerned (BLW)

Re: My family is concerned (BLW)

  • I was just talking about this with my friend.  She started her DD a few weeks ago and she has had no problem yet.  Her husband is freaked out about the choking though.  My friend is a speech therapist and she said that baby's choke reflex is much further up in their mouth then adults.

We have not started DS yet (only 5 months) but the other day we were eating pizza so I pulled off a large piece of crust (no sauce or cheese on it) and gave it to DS just to see what he would do with it and he held it and then threw it down.  We did the same thing with plain macaroni the other night and he showed zero interest.

I am not rushing it...BF is so easy now.

I too ordered the book yesterday...I am excited to read it!  Let me know how it goes next weekend!

The book talks a lot about the reasons why BLW works. I think once you've read a bit, you'll be better able to talk about it and put to rest others fears.

A week or so ago I started occasionally putting something we're already eating on DD2s high chair tray. She will kind of play with the food a little and sometimes manages to get a bit in her mouth. DD1 did the same thing when we started offering her solids. They don't really eat anything for awhile, they're just kind of exploring at first. I've offered her well-steamed carrots, broccoli, and bananas. I just don't expect much for awhile, and keep offering food. Eventually they figure out what to do with it.

  • I'm in no ways anti this...I just haven't researched it any or really thought about giving it a try. So serious question...not trying to play devils adovacate or anything.

While choking might be something I'd fear... Do you worry about allergies?

I've been carefully introducing purees (a new one every 4 days). DS leaps at foods DH and I have and I often think about letting him try certain things. I guess I just wonder---why is everything I'm reading for purees and what my pedi says to do so cautious about allergies while BLW doesn't seem to worry?

  • Sorry you have to deal with that - I haven't told many people we're doing BLW so they don't have the opportunity to judge me yet. : P

I'm reading the book right now. I was planning to wait until 6 mos, but yesterday LO grabbed a burrito out of my hands and started eating it, so he obviously thinks he's ready lol.

I was wondering the same thing!  I haven't read the book yet, but I have been doing research online.  They still do talk about the 4 day rule, if you want.  Other people just jump on in and not wait.

Personally, we are still going to slowly introduce foods...probably only 1 thing the first day and see how it goes. Maybe try the same thing the 2nd day as long as DS tolerates it.  Also, neither DH or I have any history of any food allergies so hopefully DS won't either.

  • I'm totally in the dark.  BLW = Baby led weaning???  What book are you guys discussing?

  • I have a feeling DS would try to eat a whole hamburger if we let him lol he practically drools as he stares at us eat haha :-)

I'm curious about BLW, but our first son did just fine with the "pur?e" method...hadn't heard of BLW when he was born. On the fence about how to approach it this time around.  My Dr. seemed dubious on BLW but she's a bit on the traditional side.

According to the book, waiting until 6 months also decreases the risk of allergies, especially if there is no family history.  One good tip I did recieve from an OT is finding out from the doctor what the baby's dosage of benadryl would be and to carry it around all the time.  She did BLW.  Her husband has a history of allergies, but her dr told her there was no reason she needed to hold off on dairy.  On Easter they gave him some french toast and he ended up going into anaphalatic (sp?) shock.  She feels like had she known how much benadryl he would have needed and had it on hand she could have prevented the allergic reaction to escalating to that level.  Turns out he is deadly allergic to dairy and nuts.  This reaction didn't really have much to do with BLW because her baby is a little older (maybe 9 or 10 months?) when most people are giving their babies some finger foods anyway.

  • Benadryl doesn't help with anaphylaxis anyway, only an epipen does. And in that case, even with an epipen, you still call 911. Benadryl wold help with minor skin type reactions, ie: hives, etc. we are BLW but will be introducing one item at a time... There is no more risk IMO with baby led weaning for allergies than purees.

  • If your going to do it you need to be educated and do research so it's great your getting the book. One if the biggest misconceptions is ppl thinking their baby is ready on e they show interest and grab things. Babies mimic their parents and want everything at this age but it doesn't mean they are physiologically ready. The most imp thing is the ability to sit unassisted. Please do the research before you start and prepare to be patient. Food before one is just for fun

    1) To use BLW, you really are supposed to wait til baby is 6 months, so the risk of allergies is a little less due to that (most seem to be starting babies on purees at 4 months even though the AAP doesn't recommend it anymore)

    2) If your baby hasn't had an reaction to your milk and you've been eating a varied diet while BFing, then you don't have reason to suspect allergies. If there are a lot of allergies in your family, then be cautious in introducing those foods, but otherwise, most things are free game. A few examples of good first foods are given in the book. Example: lentils = very nutritious and while the author didn't make this point, I thought it myself: lentils aren't a common allergen.

If you want to do BLW and are concerned about allergies, then you can use the same rule of thumb that the puree method uses: introduce 1 new food at a time and space them out by 2-3 days.
