So I have only flown once since the new security restrictions went into place and that was almost 4 years ago. My carryon only held my bridesmaid dress and shoes (I was flying for a wedding and I figured anything in my real suitcase could be lost but not that!) and DW's did not hold anything other than our entertainment for the flight and cruise info. So help me understand the new rules. Even after reading the TSA website I am confused!
I will be traveling with Ky who is on meds for her ear infection. I will want to bring those PLUS her motrin in my carry on. I also plan on bringing her some juice/milk and a fruit pouch thing (which are over 3 oz but the TSA website says when travelling you are allowed a reasonable amount of food/drink for your child). These are the only liquid/gels I am putting in my carry on. Should I bag the meds in one bag and the food items in another and then just declare the stuff being over when I go through security? Should I bag them all in the same bag since all of it is over the 3 oz rule? HELP!
Re: Flying help (not baby related lol)
We've done some flying with the kids lately and I always put the little things (motrin, saline spray, basically any meds) in one zip lock. The snacks and juice/milk/formula just stay in the diaper bag. I just let the person running the security line know these items are in the bag. They will pull your bag aside anyhow to swab it and check your liquids and have been told it's easier to just leave these items in the bag. Things that are sealed work great, if the milk and juice are in a sippy cup, they will open and check the liquid. When we flew back east recently, I actually was patted down on the going and return flights only because I had an "unusually" large amount of liquid=) not really, but with 3 wee ones it did add up.
Also, when we flew last time our 2 year old had a ear infection on our return trip. The Dr. recommended that we bring saline nose spray (incase of congestion) to help keep the nose clear and avoid pain that may form in the head from the increase in pressure.
Have a great trip!
Many airports have a medical liquids line specifically for people who need to carry on liquid medication, so look for that when you approach security. Some also have a families traveling with children line at security. If they don't have it, you can just go through the regular security line and let the person in your line know they are for your kid.
Also, don't forget you can get apple juice on the plane. But they let people through with baby food all the time, so you really don't need to worry too much. If anyone gives you trouble, ask to speak with a manager. Sadly, sometimes the regular TSA agents don't know the all the rules and how to correctly interpret them. But most of the time it's no big deal!

I wouldn't worry about it too much. In my experience the smaller airports have less people going through security so they're slower and there's less pressure to hurry and to have everything organized ahead of time. Also, these rules are not really that new anymore, so I think the staff at smaller airports have had time to learn them. Good luck with your trip - I hope it is amazing. I never commented before, but I think it's really great that your wife encouraged you so much to go and see your friend!
