Postpartum Depression

First Counseling Appointment...

So I had my first counseling appointment. I felt WAY WORSE afterwards, and the anxiety continued till half of today. Is this normal?

I like my counselor, but maybe I just dont understand counseling. I understand it's supposed to help you think differently, but when he tells me to think a certain way with things that make me ,"Happy," I told him, "I've tried, but my mind turns them into sad things"...

Maybe I do need medication...we'll see how more counseling goes...

Re: First Counseling Appointment...

  • Have you been diagnosed by a psychiatrist? I would start there if not. Depending on your symptoms (sounds like maybe anxiety/intrusive thoughts?), it may be that talk therapy is not necessarily the best treatment course.

But generally, I think it's normal to feel increased anxiety when starting therapy. When you're working on your issues, they are going to be more present for a while.

  • Give it some time.  If after another session (or two) you aren't getting what you need, try a different counselor.  Talk to your OB, PCP or your hospital to see if there is someone in your area that specializes in PPD/PPA.

    Hope that helps...

  • When I first started going to counseling, I was really confused by it too.  I had no idea what I was doing there and thought the whole thing was kind of bogus.  For me, it does really help to have someone to talk to.

There are actually different kinds of counselors that can help you with everything from just venting, to relationship issues, to waking up earlier, to dealing with anxiety.  They can be really good.  Do you know what kind of therapist you have?

  • counseling is important but sounds like you might need medication. perhaps make an appointment with a psychiatrist that specializes in PPD. Be up front about your feelings and keep communicating. I did some counseling and took zoloft for PPD and both worked well. But, if it really is PPD, you likely will need medication. Just reach out to a specialist and get help
