How many diapers in the stock-pile???

Anyone else start a stockpile? If so, how many packages/boxes of diapers/approx. # of diapers will I need for each size?

Is that a laughable question because the answer is: "Girl! You are going to need all the diapers you can get your hands on!"

The reason I am asking is because I have heard a lot of friends end up with wayyyy too many newborn sized diapers and not enough size 1 or 2.

Re: How many diapers in the stock-pile???

  • We started stockpiling! Almost every trip to Target we grab a pack to add to the reserve. I'd say we have 2 NB size packs (we heard the same thing) and 2 packs each of sizes 1 and 2 and then a box of size 3. I'm not sure how much more we should get of each size but I think the next couple trips will be more 1's and 2's??

  • I am a couponer and have started stock piling!  You can always exchange a pack of diapers if that brand ends up not working for your little one.  I currently have 3 boxes of size 1 pampers, 2 boxes of size 2 pampers and 4 jumbo packs of huggies different sizes.  I live by the motto, buy it went it's on sale, not when you need it.  I have been able to purchase the diapers so far at least $4 below normal price, so i figure worst case, I will donate what doesn't work for us to charity.

With DD and DS, we made sure to have 4 pkgs of newborn diapers (so about 120), 6-8 pkgs of size 1 diapers (so about 180-240), and 6-8 pkgs of size 2 diapers (so another 180-240).  These are rough estimates obviously...

You're exactly right that most end up with too many newborn diapers, as they only go up to about 9-10 lbs.  Our DD was able to be in them until almost 4 weeks old, but our DS was in size 1 before he was two weeks old...  I "think" BRU and Wal-Mart will let you bring in un-opened pkgs/boxes to exhange if you need too, but Target usually will not (depends on the store).

EDIT:  We also could only use Huggies P&N, as DD got rashes from Pampers.  We opted to skip Pampers all together when DS was born, and we'll do the same this time by starting out with Huggies P&N.

I wouldn't stockpile at all, since you don't know what diapers are going to work for your baby.

This. I had quite the stash of pampers when DD arrived. Turns out they irritated her tush and we had to switch to Huggies P&N. I ended up donating my giant stash.

I'd pick up a pack/box of newborn's and wait and see what works best for your LO. You can always just go out and purchase more. I have yet to see a store run out of diapers and a new mom in a pinch. You'll be fine.

  • I'd never thought to do this. I might have a pack or so, but, I'll just wait till the baby is here and figure out what works. Target is like 5 minutes from my house :)

  • I think you'd be better off putting a certain amount of money away per week instead of actually buying diapers for the reasons PPs mentioned.

This. If you are really set on starting a stock pile I would try to focus on the larger sizes (like 4s and 5s) - you will be in those for wayyy longer than any other size (DS has been a 4 for over a year) and by then their skin is usually not quite as sensitive so you're less likely to have issues.

  • We started stockpiling. we don't get a pack every week or every other week but we have about 5 packs of size 1 diapers (unopened) and we will start getting #2's too.

  • DH freaked out last week and went to costco.  In addition to a few small packs of newborn his mom bought us over the past year (maybe 4 of the small 25 packs) we now have a Costco size box of size 1/2 (7-14 lbs) and a box of size 3 (15-30lbs i think???)

He now feels like we have enough to get started on, and i think he's going after a box of wipes next month, but then we'll be done stockpiling until after the shower as people out here really like to do diaper/wipe raffles.

This is what I was thinking - Target (and a zillion other stores) are so close.  I will probably just get one box of newborns and one box of 1's before the baby arrives.

  • Like PP's have said, I wouldn't go crazy with stock piling. We got a ton of diapers at the showers.. between sizes and brands not working we had a bunch of exchanges.

DS was 9lbs and the hospital started him in Pampers size 1's. When we got home we tried the NB diapers we had but they were too small. He grew really fast and was into size 2 around 6 weeks.

Also Pampers are the only diapers he didn't have blow outs with so we had to exchange all the other brands. Walmart lets you exchange without a receipt but they do limit the amount. I had to have my mom exchange some for us because DH & I hit the limit. Not sure if that depends on the store.

    This.

My oldest never fit in a NB diaper either.  I am not/will not stockpile diapers for this LO bc you never know what will work!  You may end up with a huge stockpile of diapers that don't fit/give LO a rash/leak ..

We aren't stalking up after our experience with DS.  We had the large economy sized boxes with him and many of the early sizes we didn't get through the whole box (so much money wasted).  We also tried every brand before settling on Pampers.  Huggies and Target brand he leaked out of.  But who knows what will work for her?

We'll buy a package of newborn (DS was 8lbs and went straight to size 1's),and a small case of size 1's in Pampers Swaddlers.  That's it.  Besides, I don't see the point in stalking up...either way you have to spend the money, and this way you will know your budget when baby gets older, right?  If you want to "stalk up" you could always buy gift cards though (in the amount you would have spent on diapers), so you can get the brand/size you want later.

  • This is always a topic that FTM seem to come up with.  DS was born 3 weeks early and we came home with 7 diapes from the hospital.  We managed to get him enough diapers without too much fuss.  I agree that stockpiling sounds like a good idea and i'm a couponer too but it could end up being quite the waste of money for you if your LO has a reaction to the diaper and you can't return or exchange.

Ditto. Pampers worked well for DD, Huggies worked for DS. Pampers gave him a rash.

  • Last week Target had buy 2 packs get a $5 gift card!!! I'm stocked!!! But I'm having twins.
  • No stock pile but we'll probably just get a pack of NB and a pack of size 1. We don't know what he'll fit into so I don't want to go nuts on NB size. Also, DD had bad reactions to Huggies  so we'll be doing Pampers for DS as well. DD never had a blowout in those or a reaction. Every baby is different though so just go with the flow!

  • We are not stockpiling diapers because we are unsure of what brands/sizes, etc. Instead we are taking the money we would'e spent on stockpiling diapers and getting a gift card instead so that we can use the gift cards later on whatever diapers we want/need. That way we also don't have to store all those diapers for now either.

  • So far I've only gotten newborn size.  That said, I got 480 of them.  We're going to go through about 120 a week so it's only a one month supply.

  • I have two boxes of Pampers Swaddlers NB and a box of Size 1. Plus I have a cloth diaper stash. My son wore them and had no issues. If there's issues, I can donate them to my church nursery.

  • We have 3 small packs of Pampers Sensitive NB size (30 per pack).  We also have 2 boxes of Size 1 Pampers Sensitive (88 per box).  I also have some Huggies and Pampers swadlers size 1 and NB  in open packages from my SIL that her son out grew, he was born in Jan.   I also have  several  boxes/packages of Wipes we have Pampers Sensitive and Huggies Pure & Natuaral wipes.

I am not sure if we will buy anymore before baby comes or not.  I do have Pampers Sensitive Size 2 on my registry.
