Late roller- sleeping question.

So on Friday, DCP called me to tell me that DS rolled over. Something we've been working on for awhile. I was so happy, but now he's rolling in his sleep, a lot. I've been checking on him once an hour, and I keep finding him on his tummy face down. Should I leave him like that, or roll him onto his back?

This is all new to me since he has always slept on his back.

Re: Late roller- sleeping question.

  • They say once they can roll themselves over it is fine for them to sleep on their stomach since you can't exactly stand over them all night flipping them over.

  • True, but he keeps waking up. I know I can't watch him all night, I just hope he can get used to sleeping on his tummy instead of constantly waking up.

  • DD does this occasionally... admittedly she is still in her tiny co-sleeper so it's harder for her, but when she does it usually wakes her up. I don't know if it would help, but what I do is position her kind of curled up facing one wall, so she feels secure and doesn't try to roll forward. If I don't do this, the first thing she does is roll over and her little head pops up. I'm not sure where your LO is sleeping right now though, not to sure it would work with a crib unless it had breathable bumpers.  If you are worried, you could invest in an Angel Care Moniter/ Movement Detector. Babies at this age are supposed to have a significantly lower risk of SIDS, but If DD was rolling over in her sleep I'd buy one. I'm just too paranoid.

  • You will go insane if you keep rolling LO over. Just let them be, they will fall asleep eventually. DD has slept on her tummy since 4 months. We were rolling her over for four hours that first night. Save your sanity! :-)

  • Mine just started rolling too and does the same. We let him stay on his tummy for the most part and just keep an eye on the video monitor and I turn it way up so I can hear him breathe.  The only way I go in and roll him back over is if he is fussing and I know he won't go back to sleep unless I do.

  • Thanks! I'll try putting him on his side, since that is his preferred position.
