No whole eggs until after 12 month shots?/SIL Vent

Has anyone ever heard of this?  I thought (assumed) the egg white was re: allergies (for those Drs that DO still say to hold off), but SIL nearly had a stroke yesterday at a BBQ when I said DS had had eggs and food made with eggs.  "No, but not whole eggs."  Yep.  "Oh, they must have changed it since S was younger.  He couldn't have his cake until after his 12 month shots since there's egg in it."

Really...?  Did you buy egg-free bread for dinner on the weekend, because you didn't react when when I gave some to DS.  I can't remember, but I find it hard to believe my nephews didn't have bread, pasta, etc. until after 12 months.

I was trying so hard to not just snap, "Leave me alone.  SHE (cousin-IL who was across the yard that I've side-eyed on here before) has already weaned her 8 month old from formula to 2%."  But I didn't.  I just shrugged and went for more alcoholic punch. :)

Wha?  Never heard that.  Her dr's only no-no foods at the 9 month visit were peanut butter and choking hazards like nuts and popcorn.

  • Our Pedi said as long as they were cooked thoroughly that it was fine. In other words do not give LO "Over Easy" eggs. We give Bay scrambled eggs all the time. I have alos given her bites of a breakfast scramble I order at restaurants.

  • That would just be crazy! Our pedi said to stay away from pbutter, honey, and other choking hazards but told us giving only yolk wasn't necessary and to start with the whole egg, at 7 months...

I don't think there is any truth to that.

My lo is allergic/sensitive to eggs from my breast milk and was never told that. We will be testing him with some cooked eggs in a couple of weeks.

If you check the ingredients there are a lot of breads and pastas, etc with out eggs and taste yummy.

For DS's birthday cake, I will use something else in place of eggs in the cake mix.

  • Eh.  Some people follow all the rules to the T!  I'm not one of those people.  My dad gave Audrey eggs around 6 months.  He didn't know you were supposed to wait.  When I told the pedi, he shrugged off.  Clearly she was fine.  No big deal, imo.  Besides, eggs are great brain food.
  • It's because lots of vaccines are cultured in egg whites and they want the first exposure to be in the shot (this is what my RN sister in law told me anyway) that said, DS had a flu shot at 6 months which is cultured in egg whites.  So there is no winning in this mommy game just the fun of playing.
  • It seems like some of the pedi advice is sketchier then non doctor advice sometimes!! We introduced eggs to our son after we'd given him a bunch of different foods and he'd had no reactions. He did fine.

If there is a family history of allergens I think THOSE people need to be a little more careful...but if there are none, then your kid will most likely be fine.

  • My pedi said no eggs until 1 yr, but I've always thought that was odd since he has pasta, bread and other things made with eggs.
HELL...his flu shot had eggs in it.

This is what our pedi said - and wants us to wait until 12 months. (BUT, items cooked with egg are somehow okay??) I think it is complete bullsh!t and disagree, but MH wants to "be safe." UGH. Since it is the only food restriction the pedi gave and since we love him otherwise... I play along, though sometimes baby has pasta salad with hard-boiled egg in it and he did have scrambled egg before the pedi said anything about avoiding it.

This, we did the yolks first and then whites, if there was no reaction they were free to eat eggs, scrambled, in foods, etc.

  • My pedi has always said no eggs until after the MMR at 15 months. I do what my doctor says when it comes to things like that. They went to med school; I didn't.

But that's why I find the cake thing so weird.  And the vaccine thing makes sense, though we weren't given any restrictions personally.

  • bookkitten-your husband sounds like mine.  HA.  He is so cautious even though he was at the appt. when pedi said he could have anything we ate except WCM, eggs, honey, etc.  He still hesitates and gets mad at me when I try to sneak things to DS.  But I won't complain since he makes 99% of DS's food and feeds him his meals if he is home.

Our pedi said to wait on eggs till 11 months, but would like him to have them b/4 his 12 month shots.  After reading this post I do have to laugh because DS did get a flu shot and he was fine.
