I had 18 million questions when I went!  I would definitely bring a pen and paper and write down everything he/she tells you. That was probably the most helpful thing I did because I've referenced that sheet several times after the appt.

As far as questions, I researched all of the treatments I thought he might recommend based on my test results (I had all of my initial testing done with my obgyn). That allowed me to ask various questions about meds (how and when to take them), treatment options (monitoring),  further testing, and how long we would try different treatments before moving on to something else.

  • They are likely to bombard you with information. I felt a little overwhelmed after mine, so expect that. I second the idea to do some research on potential treatments so you are more familiar with the info they will throw at you. Mine gave me a printed packet full of info and recommendations to take home...kind of a summary of everything the visit covered.

Find out who/when/how you should ask questions after you leave the appointment.  And don't feel like you _have_ to be super prepared...they are the expert, they will tell you what you need to know. Write down any questions you do have, and find out how to ask the ones you will have later. I think most REs will cover the majority of your questions without being asked. Mine did. GL!

Have you already done all of the testing? Or is this a preliminary meeting before you've done HSG, SA etc?

My first meeting was basically all sorts of medical questions relating to my periods, whether I've ever been pregnant/DH got anyone pregnant, and family history.

If you've done the testing and are going for that first visit to find out results, then I'd ask what the doctor believes the protocol should be for your treatment. Does he/she recommend monitored Clomid only? Will they throw an IUI in there if you have MFI to increase your odds? One thing I've learned is know that you drive the bus. While many RE's are very nice, you need to know they see many of us on a daily/weekly/monthly basis. It's important to not only find out what their protocol is, but let them know how aggressive/passive you'd like to be. Make sure you have clear cut guidelines as to communication with the RE/nurses, who you contact with questions, monitoring times, calling after hours/weekends etc. GL!

This.  I was a little disappointed after my first appointment, because I think I expected them to be like, "We will start working on getting you KU tomorrow!"  In reality, they just ordered a bunch of prelim testing...it was another month or two before we began actual treatment.

Also, my initial consult included a meeting with the financial advisor...so you might want to look into insurance first and see if anything is covered.

  • I have had day 3 b/w, but no HSG and DH has not had a SA yet. I assume he will be ordering those tests.

My insurance riders talk in circles about what is covered and what is not. I am going to assume nothing is covered, and if something is then I will be pleasantly surprised.
