Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Traveling with baby overseas

This summer, we will be taking LO from the US to India to let her meet her great grandmother, who may not be with us for much longer.  As she is my grandmother's first great grandchild, this is an important trip, not only for us but for grandma as it will allow her to meet her great grandchild.  The flight will be very long, about 20 hours with layovers.  Any advice for traveling with an 11 month old?

Bring "new" toys to keep her entertained. I've seen it suggested to get one new toy, from the dollar store, for each hour of your trip. Also, have plenty of snacks handy. Good luck!

  • We just did a 6-hour flight with our twin girls. Will you be traveling alone? If you're able to bring someone with you for an extra set of hands, that is ideal. My parents traveled with us and it was great to be able to pass the girls around.

Our girls weren't "bad" on the flight, just restless and a bit fussy (and overtired). I brought my Ergo on and ended up putting each of them in it at different points when they really needed to sleep. I brought a bag of toys and books. I also brought a few containers with cut up fruit. I nursed them a few times and they loved eating their blueberries. At home, they don't watch TV but that went out the window on the flight. We also had an iPad with a few baby games on it. Given how restless they were, we did whatever we could to keep them distracted.

  • We've travelled with our LO 4 times from London to Milwaukee ( 8 hour flight) and the best advice I can give is to just stay on top of everything.  We probably fed and changed her quite a bit more often to make sure she was comfortable.  So, bring lots of food, snacks, water or whatever your LO drinks.  New toys are great and tend to keep their attention better than older ones. Our LO loves books especially the touch and feel ones.  They are quiet which is helpful!!  I think the dollar store idea is fantastic with a new toy for every hour. Well, maybe not every hour as that will be quite the load.  I felt a little guilty giving her more snacks than she usually gets but it's one day and your sanity is worth it. She also did enjoy sitting/ standing on my lap and looking behind me at all the people. It was entertain for her.  Hope it all goes smoothly!!  We are flying again in 3 weeks and am hoping for the best too!!  Good luck!!
  • We are taking a trip in August. Do you bf or use formula? I bf but supplement because I don't make enough. We are planning to use cows milk this summer but talked to the pedi and he gave the ok to use formula (even after the switch to cows milk) so we can bring the ready to use formula with us. I didn't want to worry about cows milk in another country or the water to make formula. Just a thought.
