Please don't flame me....Real question

So my DD has been STTN since 7 weeks (meaning 8+ hours uninterrupted).  She is now 4 months old and I heard about this wakeful period but now she's sleeping close to 10-12 hours per night uninterrupted.  We LOVE this and are SO LUCKY but I am getting kind of worries that she is sleeping TOO much.  Isn't she supposed to be awake more for growing and learning?? She had her 4 month check and she is early in reaching all her milestones, she is doing EVERYTHING except rolling over from back to front and sitting up on her own unassisted but sits in the bumbo by herself no problem.  She was born three weeks early (her weight in just fine but she is definitely on the smaller side).

What do you guys think? Should I try to keep her awake more? Should I worry about this?

Please know that we understand how lucky we are I just want to make sure everything is OK.

Thank you.

  • I think it depends how much she is sleeping during the day.  My DD sleeps about the same as yours at night.  She usually takes about a 1 hour nap in the morning and about two hours in the early afternoon.

Count your blessings! :) Babies actually do tons of growing in their sleep and their brains form new connections during sleep. Not all babies go through the 4 month wakeful. I swear DD2 went through a wakeful period at around 3 months as opposed to 4. She's super aware of the world around her, rolling both ways, very interactive with toys, etc.

I would not try to keep your LO awake more. Babies need sleep and an overtired baby is no fun to deal with. Once a baby is overtired, it's actually harder to get them to sleep.

The reason the wakeful period happens to some babies is that they are so focused on learning new skills and becoming more aware of their surroundings that it disrupts their sleep. It's like when your mind is racing and you can't sleep. Not all babies are affected this way though. DD1 went through the textbook 4 month wakeful and it was not fun! Enjoy your sleep!

  • Don't flame me either - but my son has been STTN since 6 weeks and he now sleeps close to 11 hours each night.  He also takes a 2 - 2.5 hour nap in the morning and an hour in the afternoon, and then cat naps once in the evening....I asked my doc about it and he said that as long as he is hitting on the milestones and gaining weight, he is perfectly fine and to count myself super lucky to have such a good baby.  So we are enjoying and extremely grateful....so go enjoy, stop worrying :)  lol

  • My DD also sleeps 10-11 hours at night, and I am not concerned in the least. She sleeps also about an average of 4 hours during the day (some days it could be more, some days it could be less, though).

I didn't realize that there could be an issue w/ sleeping like that? My 1st DD (who is 3 now) has always slept 10-12 hours at night, and still does in most cases. She's healthy and happy!

Also, my pediatrician said that babies do as much growing during their sleep as they do when they are eating.

Ahhh I feel much better! Thanks ladies! She averages 4-5 hours of sleep a day between two naps (one AM one PM).

    I definitely feel lucky!

  • Just curious. What are your sleeping arrangements? Every time I hear of a good sleeper I just want to know what they're doing because its obviously working. My lo is up eh... bout 5-8 times a night...

I have no idea what we're doing right.  I think we just got lucky. Apparently both my husband and myself as well as my mom-in-law STTN really early on. I keep waiting for the night that she stops and is up all night.  We just make sure to give her an extra large feeding (I breastfeed) and we put her in her Woombie (AWESOME) and make sure she has her white noise if she wants it.  Also baths at night really help but we don't always do that.

Good luck.  I'm sure we're just lucky. We certainly don't know what we're doing.... :)

I think we are lucky too.  The only difference from before STTN to after STTN is making sure she's eating enough during the day so that she's not hungry at night.  She's slept in her crib since her first day home and we only swaddled her for the first month.  I consider it pure luck (and I am grateful).
