Thanks for your replies in my doctor thread. Did you leave near an international adoption clinic? The closest one to us is over three hours away and in another state. I am wondering if it would be helpful- ie) would they be able to give good referrals to someone local for us? It happens to be in the same city we'll be flying in and out of; would we be crazy to go right from the airport to the clinic when we get home with him (or maybe the next day)?

Re: *sosweet06* and *noonecarewhoiam*
Sorry for the delay--I've not really been on The Nest/Bump since the boards changed over.
Yes, I do live near an IA clinic. In total, we had 3 meetings with them: upon referral (I needed a specialist consult); one for medical/labs; and one with the developmental ped.
Personally, I would not want to go straight there--especially with an older child. I would want to give the child some time to bond before poking him with needles.
The other downside is the cost--definately make sure find out what your insurance covers and when it begins. We had a nightmare situation with DS#1, as the HR people at his employer gave us incorrect information, and we ended up having to pay out of pocket something like $700, which was NOT easy on top of all the expenses and unpaid maternity leave.
Alternately, if you know the extent of your child's special needs, a local specialist physician would be an alternative. I also urge you to consult a developmental ped--maybe the IA clinic can offer you a referral there.
Sorry, I just saw this! We do live near an IA clinic. My parents don't though, and they took my sister to the same clinic a few weeks post adoption. I think it's worth it, but I wouldn't go straight there if I could help it. They will be asking you a TON of questions regarding behavior, habits, etc., that you just probably won't be able to answer when you step off the plane. But, they would be able to do an initial intake and go over the paperwork if absolutely necessary.
I'm not sure if they would be able to give you a local referral or not--ours is specifically located within a large children's hospital, so all of their referrals were made to the necessary clinics within the hospital. I'm sure they could tell you that over the phone though!
