NBR: Travel?

Two Questions.

We will be gone for a week. When you leave your home for an extended period of time do you turn the air off of leave it on a reasonable temp? Maybe 80? It's hot in Tx already(90 yesterday). I can't recall what we've done in the past.

When you rent a rental car do you add the optional insurance? Is there really a reason to? If you already have full coverage does that insure the rental or no? The rental car company told me we could opt out of the optional one if we brought proof of our own. Do they all cover rentals?

TIA!

Re: NBR: Travel?

  • We leave our heat or a/c on a reasonable temp when we leave, and we do not get the insurance when we rent a car.  Our car insurance covers rentals.

hmmm. I wonder if all full coverage does? We have good insurance. I guess I should call. Blah.

We have cats so we leave the house no warmer than 76.

Get the insurance. DH used to work at Hertz and it is totally worth it. We had a rental that got a huge crack in the windshield from a rock. We took it back and they gave us a new car. No problems....it took 5 mins. Totally worth it, because sometimes your insurance does not cover everything.

  • My insurance does cover rentals (Geico) - we didn't do anything special to get that coverage, so I would think that yours does - but of course, it's probably better to confirm that!

I usually set it to 85. We keep it on 77 usually so 80 wouldn't be much of a difference. We have a programmable thermostat, so if I have the time, I'll set it so it's 85 the whole time we're gone, and then starts cooling down to 77 the day we get back.

    we also have Geico.

The rental is only for the 1st day of our trip (driving 2 hours away to see my Grandparents but just for one night and day) so the insurance would literally cost more than we are paying for the rental. I hate to opt in if we are already covered.

Then you should be good to go, I found the answer in their FAQs so it's not unique to my policy or anything - but I think you'll have to log in to see this page:

  • I used to work in insurance. It wasn't Geico, but it should all be the same. If you say you have fully coverage I'm assuming you have property damage, comp and collision. If so, you should be good to go and no reason to get the insurance on rental. We never do. No reason to spend extra money that you already pay a premium with your carrier for.

As for the temp, if you have a programable one I'd just set it to be a temp that won't kick it on a lot while you're gone. We're going to be gone for ten days next month and I'll probably set it to 80 since like you said it's been getting in the 90's here already.

  • I leave the A/C no higher than 79. There is so much humidity in FL that there is a risk for mold if you don't keep it cool in your home.

I do not add the optional insurance when we rent cars because our car insurance already covers rental cars. You need to check your own policy to find out if yours does. I always like to see things for myself in writing for my own peace of mind.

  • We always turn the AC up to about 80-85. We have to kennel our dog so he's not there anyways & why waste money when you can save for a week.

As for the extra insurance on a rental, call your provider to make sure they cover rentals. If they do then you are fine. They will push that insurance & make you feel that you need it only because they get a referral or incentive pay. You do not need it if you already have coverage.
