What age is ADD/ADHD usually dx?

I know my DS has this but I'm not sure when I start pushing for the dx.  He will be 4 in July and I keep being told his behavior is normal for his age but I know there is something more to it.  I had what is now called ADHD when I was a child and his hlaf brother (my step son) has it as well.

In the fall he will be going into his second year at pre school.  I feel like if they know there is this issue they will work with him better vs. the general time out.  I also feel like if I can get a dx my DH might be more understanding of his behaviors and hopefully his current patrenting techniques will improve.  He currently is too strict and yells too much.

I had to push the "system" for his Apraxia dx when he was 2 and not talking so I could get him the help he needed.  I'm fairly system savy since I'm a social worker.

Also this is sort of random but he is left handed and I feel like he might need to be taught in a different way because he thinks differently.  I'm sort of a helicopter parent so I'm trying not to over do things and make things worse for my DS.  He tells me to quit annoying him sometimes.  Embarrassed

We saw the dev pedi at 3 and she dx'd at that time.f you have concerns, go to a good dev pedi. Also some of some of the forms I have filled out a long the way, ask if kiddo is left hand.

interesting.   My son is left handed and I was just thinking about all of this and wondering when/if they will dx my son with ADD.  Never put the two together.  Hmmm...

  • DD1 was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 5 (although our neuropsychologist will evaluate as early as the age of 4). Interestingly enough she is also left-handed. Prior to the ADHD diagnosis, we took her in to get evaluated by an OT and got the diagnosis of Sensory Processing Disorder-which typically accompanies ADHD. DD1 is a sensory seeker and either her body is constantly moving or her mouth is (talking, chewing, making noises etc) so the OT gave us tips to give her the sensory input her body needs to focus. You could start with an OT eval and go from there. I waited to get DD1 evaluated for ADHD since I knew she was too young even though I knew it wasn't just her age, I held out hope it was something she would outgrow....which it wasn't and she hasn't.....

  • While you say most, some do.  We were blindsided when KKI diagnosed our boy with ADHD/Impulsive on the day after his 4th birthday.   We ended up there in an effort to solve behavioural problems that appeared at daycare.
