Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Formula is making my 3-month-old constipated

I am weaning off breast milk and adding in formula feedings. My baby used to poop 6-8 times a day and then he went almost 3 days without pooping. He finally pooped this morning after a little help with a home remedy. But now he hasn't pooped all day and is pushing and fussy like he has to poop.

Is this normal that formula can do this? He is on Infant Emfamil. Should I try a different brand? I'm not sure what to do.

any advice or help. thanks so much!

Re: Formula is making my 3-month-old constipated

  • My girls had this issue during the first couple months.  My milk never really cam in so they were FF from the start.  It is normal for a FF to not poop as much as a BF baby.  My girls usually go once every day sometimes every other day.  If your lo is really trying to poop and can't then our Pedi told us to try an ounce of prune juice and if that didn't work then the infant glycerin suppositories (which work great).  Our girls hated the prune juice so when they get constipated we use the suppositories.  We were told to use them as a last resort.  You can also insert the tip of a thermometer into your lo's butt and very gently press down to get them to go. Again this is something that you do very seldom and as a last resort.  GL hope your lo feels better.

  • Adding Miralax to their bottles is the only thing that helped for us. Although, unless it's actually hard and pellet like, it's not considered constipation.

  • Going every three days doesn't mean LO is constipated, like PP said, constipated is when they have small, or hard poop. But formula is very constipating, my older son was FF and was ALWAYS constipated. We went to a GI doctor for his reflex and he told me that formula takes so much more digesting than breastmilk, and is way more constipating. His solution, and the one that works to this day, is flax oil. It's Dr. Sears recommendation too, you just add a 1 teaspoon to their bottle everyday. It works like a charm for my older son. It's nice because it's actually good for them too.

This!! DD is FF and poops once a day usually, sometimes twice, sometimes every other day. When we first started on formula, there were a few days where she didnt poop in a row, but then it evened out. Just stick with one formula for a while, because it takes a while to get used to.
