Pulmicort

Hi everyone,

I haven't posted in quite some time but I have a questions re pulmicort. I have micropreemies born at 26wks. Both have been on and off pulmicort since they were one (currently 2.5) with mild asthma. Dr. recently took them off again and they are now coughing a lot at night time. I don't know if this is maybe just a cold (although no other symptoms during the day besides an occasional sneeze) or allergies, or that the pulmicort was really helping them from not coughing at night. Anyone have children on pulmicort long term? Side effects you've experienced? I obviously don't want this to go further and end up having breathing issues which usually involves a hospital stay to keep their O2 levels steady.

Re: Pulmicort

  • My daughter is on pulmicort--no end in sight.  Honestly, we have not noted any negative side effects, but the benefits have been tremendous.  She aspirates and so the pulmicort helps her lungs.

My twins born at 32w3d were on pulmicort since 10 mo old.  They are 6 now and DD is still on pulmicort twice daily.  DS graduated to a regular inhaler.  We tried to switch DD and her coughing kicked off again.  We've also tried to wean her to once a day and after about 2 weeks the coughing starts again.  She is also on Brovana which is a bronchodilator once daily.  They both take singulair as well.  No end in sight for us either and no negative side effects thankfully.

  • DS is on Flovent for nighttime coughing.  They are going to try to take him off in August, but if it doesn't work, he'll be on it long-term.  I've read that a year's course of inhaled steroids is akin to one round of oral steroids.  They're really not that bad.

  • My DD (now 4) had RSV at 8 months of age and has fought "reactive airway disease" ever since.   This year is the first since that she has not been on pulmicort daily from autumn through end of winter.  For her, it helped avoid detioration to bronchitis/pneumonia from each little virus or bacteria encountered.  Our pedi has her do an albuterol treatment first, to open the airways, followed by the pulmicort neb.  It was an essential part of life for our B for the first year she took it, and I am thankful now that it was available.

This winter was very mild and we just were not exposed to as many contagious stuff, in general.
