At DS's 6mo. appt, the doctor recommended that he be put on an iron supplement because of his age and no other factors. Well, long story short, he won't take any kind of meds by mouth now, and is EBF (no bottles or even paci's). So in looking for other options for iron supplements, I've come across some good articles that contradict giving iron supplements right now. The doctor did say that at his next appt when he is 9mo., they will be testing his hemoglobin levels. So what is everyone else doing?

Re: Iron supplements for BF baby
Here is a good article on Kellymom indicating that unless you have reason to supplement with iron, BM has enough iron for normal babies.

My son is also EBF (no paci, no bottles, he is a thumb sucker)... We haven't had is WBV yet, but I would want his Hg tested before giving a supplement..

We weren't told to do iron supplements and based on what I've read it's rarely necessary. You could always introduce iron rich foods as well as foods that are high in vitamin c to help with absorption

I have not been told this by my dr, but one of my friends drs told her to supppliment with iron as she started on fruit and veg as solids instead of cereal (as cereal is iron fortified), I think this is outdated information now though
As someone who has had to give LO iron suppliments from birth to 5 months (hg was low due to antibody reaction), the main check we were told to look for was under the eyelids, if they are pale, then the baby might be anaemic, but I would still get tested first before giving suppliment.
