Mommas,
Has anyone been prescribed Protonix for acid reflux, and if so, was it helpful? I made the mistake of googling it, and although it is Category B, it now makes me nervous.
I have been getting sick at night about 4x a night for a week and Pepcid/Zantac don't help. Eating smaller meals, not eating at night, and avoiding spicy foods, caffeine and carbonation isn't helping.
Thanks for the info, as well as any other suggestions that you may have for dealing with this new part of pregnancy!
Re: acid reflux
I'll take RX Zantac in a pinch (up to 150 twice a day), but I try to deal with it naturally by
-no longer consuming non-fermented dairy (namely, not drinking milk)
-taking papaya enzyme when I start to feel it
-trying to get down a small glass of water with a 1/4 tsp or more of baking soda mixed in
-sleeping with my head elevated
-regular chiropractic adjusment (may sound wacky, but it works for me)
I didn't know all of these tricks in my last PG and the acid reflux caused me to throw up from weeks 7-37 in the PG. Blah! I am soooo glad that isn't the case this time.
More Green For Less Green
when i was 14 weeks along i started having problems with acid reflux/indigestion. at first i felt overly full from the tiniest of meals (half a banana!) then soon i wasn't able to keep any food down, sometimes even water.
i was prescribed protonix but it didn't do anything for me, it only helped the first day. i have heard of many women taking it during pregnancy though, so i wouldn't be concerned about it's safety.
for 2 1/2 weeks i threw up everything i tried to eat, i lost 11 pounds. my chiropractor told me about a supplement called Gastrex by Standard Process. all of my vitamins are by standard process (only sold by health professionals). Gastrex is for healing all types of things including acid reflux, indigestion issues, stomach ulcers... i felt 100% back to normal the day after i started taking it, and after just 10 days, i haven't had to be on any medication.
my chiropractor explained to me that too much acid is never the problem, it's that the acid your stomach produces isn't strong enough, so the food doesn't digest properly, and causes acid to go into your esophagus. taking an acid reducer is probably fine short-term, but long term it can cause issues such as osteoporosis because it prevents your body from digesting minerals.
i hope this helps, i always try to do things naturally & treat the problem not just the symptom! & sorry this was long, i just feel really bad for anyone going through this since i know how miserable it can be :
