Avery is here! A novel of a birth story

Little to my knowledge, I would have my last OB appt on Tuesday, May 15. It was just a regular 1 week check-up... Perfect BP, weight gain of 14lbs total, dilated to 2cm, 80% effaced, head engaged, and very favorable for birth. She was ready to come out sometime soon! Denise (my midwife) asked if I would like her to strip my membranes, and with no hesitation at all I said "YES!". It didn't really hurt at all, but then again, I was already in so much pain from Avery's head being so low. After she was done, Denise said that she expected it to work soon and that she would "see me at the hospital by the end of the week". She was sure I wouldn't make it to my next appt (that next Monday), and I was hoping she was right.

I went home afterward and started getting things in order. Cleaning, packing bags, making lists, bouncing on my birth ball, etc... Anything to keep me on my feet and moving around to hopefully progress me even more. Later that evening, DH and I took Trent out to the lake to walk the trail. I wasn't contracting at all, and it still hurt like crazy, but I had to keep moving as much as I could. We walked 2 miles before I finally gave up because my pubic bone hurt so bad. Back home we went to wait. I took a hot shower, shaved my legs, had DH rub my entire body down with lotion, and then I painfully climbed into bed to try to get some sleep.

I was up the entire night crying from my pubic bone pain, back pain, hip pain, and because I had to pee like every 5 minutes. That morning I got up and got my older boys ready and on the bus for school. I felt different. I felt nauseated, I had been having diarrhea for almost 2 weeks, I was tired... I just felt extremely off. I got Trent fed and told him that he could play the Wii while I laid down in my bed and drowned myself in my sorrows. I ugly cried for about an hour, complaining to myself about the pain and how I couldn't do it anymore. I had to pee, yet again, so I started working up the courage to sit myself up in bed and prepare myself to walk to the bathroom. As soon as I set up, I felt a little trickle. **. I just pissed in my bed. I squeezed it back as best I could and hobbled down to the bathroom with little dribbles running down my leg. WTF?! With all the problems I had been having, I now got to add "loss of bladder control" to the list. Sat on the toilet and relieved myself. Got up and had another trickle run down my leg. Ok yeah, this just isn't right. Why am I peeing all over myself? Then it hit me like a ton of bricks... I think my water broke!

I hobbled as fast as I could back to my bedroom, and not even thinking of the ick factor, I inhaled deeply and took a very long sniff of my "pee" on my bed. No smell. Ran back to the bathroom and got down on my hands and knees and stared deeply at the tiniest little "pee" puddle on the floor. No color. Sniff sniff. No smell. I somehow managed to get myself up off the floor and went and grabbed my phone to call my mom. "Ma, I dunno what the hell is going on but either I'm pissing all over myself or my water broke, but not completely.". She asked if I was having any pains... none. "Well then I think you're just peeing yourself but I'll come over if you think you need to go get checked out." Yep, I wanted to go get checked. I was in denial, and I really thought I was just peeing myself, but I just had to be sure. Got dressed, all the while still having a dribble here and there, added a pad to my panties, and waited for mom to come sit with Trent.

As soon as she got there, I grabbed my keys and set off toward the hospital. She offered to drive me but the boys had an early release day from school, so she had to stay there just in case. No big deal though, I'd be back shortly anyways. I called DH on my way there to give him a heads up, but told him that I expected it to be pee and that I would call him and let him know. He let me know that he was almost 2 hours away, so that if something WAS going to happen, I needed to call him right away so he could have plenty of time.

I got to the hospital, checked into triage, told the nurse what was going on, and we started the Amnisure test to see if I was ruptured. She stuck a q-tip in me, let it sit there for 1 minute, then said she would be back in about 10 minutes to let me know if it was positive. I sat back, started to check my FB, and prepared myself to be sent home in just a few minutes. Boom... small contraction. Holy hell, I might get to stay after all! Nurse comes walking in with a huge smile on her face... "YOU'RE RUPTURED! You get to stay, so we're getting a room ready for you now!". YAY YAY YAY! The pain was going to end in just a matter of hours! Avery was coming out to see us! I was finally going to meet my long awaited for daughter. Boom... my water broke completely and a massive amount of fluid gushed all over the place.

I immediately call DH... no answer. Call my mom and tell her what's going on and give her a run-down on what to do with the boys. Call DH again, still no answer. Thats the perks of construction... they can't hear *** when they're working. Finally after an hour and 5+ more phone calls, I finally get ahold of him and tell him to come home, it's time. By this time I had already been ruptured for a couple hours, I hadn't progressed at all, and my contractions weren't picking up in intensity. Before the nurse even got to open her mouth to mention it, I told her to hook me up to the pit and let's get the show on the road. I've had pit before and my body responds to it very well, and I didn't want another drawn out 24+ hour labor and delivery like I had with my previous birth, so I felt very confident being on the pit. I got hooked up and was checked again. 3cm and 90% effaced. Not much progression, but I expected that. I called my sister to tell her to go pick up my camera and head to the hospital.

The nurse and I then started to talk about an epidural. I was very scared to get one since I had so many problems with my last epidural, and because I have had previous problems with epi's even working properly. The anesthesiologist discussed things that we could try to prevent it all from happening again, and I began to seriously consider getting it. About that time DH walked in and I filled him in on what the anesthesiologist had said, and at that time we decided to go ahead and do it. I really wanted to finally, hopefully have a labor and delivery that I could actually enjoy... I kept my fingers crossed.

Placing the epidural was painful. Even though I had had 6 other epidurals, I didn't know that they hurt because the other times I had been out of it because of Stadol. I didn't get that this time, so I got to feel everything while in my right mind and fully aware. Finally it was in, they got me all situated in bed, placed a catheter, and then we waited to see if I would develop the same problems as the last time. It worked! I was finally getting a birth that I could actually enjoy! I was checked again and I was 5cm and fully effaced. Uh-oh, my sister better hurry up! Usually I stall at 3 for a good few hours and then progress quickly afterward, so knowing that I'm at a 5 means things are going to happen pretty fast. I call her again and tell her to step on it and that I'm at a 5. She said she was around 20 minutes away and that she would hurry. I tell the nurses that they might wanna call Denise and give her a heads up to come this way shortly, and then I tell DH to get ready, it won't be long now. Not even 3 minutes later I felt intense pressure and I yelled out that she was coming NOW! The nurses check me and sure enough, I'm complete and her head was right there. I began to panic because my camera wasn't there yet and there was no way that I was going to have a baby and take iPhone pictures. No way in hell. I didn't even care that Denise wasn't there, I just wanted my camera. Denise was called and apparently she was down the street at the store with her kids. She had yelled at her kids to get in the car, we have to go now! LOL! I call my sister and tell her to get the eff there NOW, I'm complete and ready to push. I wasn't ready to push though, I was sucking her in because I wanted that damn camera there!

About 2 minutes later, Denise runs in and gowns up, about 1 minute after that, my sister shows up, gets the camera out, and we're ready to go! I was put up in the stirrups and I immediately had a contraction. I push and her head crowns. Push again, her head is out. Slight push, her shoulders were out. I could see her little face and I began to cry. She was so beautiful and looked exactly like her brother. I saw that she had blond hair, a cute little mole on top of her head, and the cutest little squished nose. I push one last time and she was out and placed on my chest at 8:02pm, May 16th. I was crying even more now, DH was crying, and my sister was snapping pictures every few seconds between her sobs. My girl was here! DH cut her cord and she was cleaned off, weighed, and measured. 6lbs 6oz and 19in of pure beauty was brought back to me, and in that second, my life was complete.

From 1st trickle to outside baby, my labor and delivery was 6.5 hours long. She wasted no time to get here! My mom brought her brothers up to meet her and that was instant love. They got to hold her and take a few pictures and then we were transferred to the post-partum room.

I was supposed to go into surgery for my tubal that next morning at 8:00a, so I was "NPO-nothing by mouth" after midnight. 8 came and went that next morning and a nurse came in and told me that I had been bumped and surgery was looking to be around 1:30p now. I was a starving and parched mess by the time they came and got me for surgery. I signed all the paperwork and was wheeled into the operating room where the anesthesiologist gave me her special c0cktail to calm my nerves. Next thing I know, it's 3 hours later and I'm waking up in recovery in lots of pain. The dr came in and told me there was a small complication, but it was a complication nonetheless. When he went to bring my left tube through the incision, it was very swollen, and it was like wet tissue paper and tore right off. There was also a cyst the size of a golf ball at the end of it, although benign, that sucker still had to come through a small incision. In order for him to repair where it tore off and to make sure I didn't internally bleed out, he had to clamp my incision over to the left for almost an hour. That is why the bulk of my pain is on the left side. The right side was normal and he had no problems at all. He said that I'm in much more pain than what a normal tubal would have put me in. He also said that having my tubal could possibly have saved my life because if my tube would have detached on its own, I would have never known it and would have internally bled. I have to take 10mg of oxycodone every 4 hours and 800mg of ibuprofen every 6 hours just to get an ounce of relief. However, with no left tube and a completely sealed off right tube, I never have to go through this again and I'm very thankful for that and excited to start the newest chapter of my life... reproductive years are over!

Breastfeeding is going well, despite her tearing up my left nipple and some slight nipple confusion from having 2 bottles (which I ok'd) while I was in surgery and recovery. It was a *** to work her out of the confusion, but I think I have it under control now. My milk took a couple of days to come in, and now I feel like a walking milk machine...lol! I took her in to be weighed yesterday and she now weighs 5lbs 14oz. , the same weight I was when I was born. She is absolutely the most beautiful baby girl I've ever laid eyes on, of course. ;) She's already a momma's girl and has her daddy and big brothers wrapped around her little finger.
