3rd Trimester

Talk to me about baby shampoo and soap.

What do you use?  Why?  I had always thought Johnson's was the go-to for keeping baby clean but it seems to have lots of bad press lately.

I live in Canada so not sure if there's a difference in what's available here, but I'd love some suggestions .

Thanks :)

Johnson&Johnson made DD break out in a really bad rash.  My pedi had mentioned to me that Lavender scented soaps are really bad for babies and will usually cause at least dry skin but usually a rash - just an FYI.

DD did well w/ Baby Aveeno.  She now uses my Olay Moisturizing Body Wash (and she has really sensitive skin); I'm going to see how #2 reacts to it.  It's soo much easier to have the whole family on one soap.  (For shampoo DD uses Suave 2in1 for kids)

  • DS used J&J mostly and it was fine, he has somewhat sensitive skin but we never had an issue with it.  It can be a little drying.  We also tried California Baby and liked that esp. when he had cradle cap but couldn't justify the cost all the time. Aveeno worked fine as well.

We just switched him to "kids" shampoo & conditioner and could not believe how much we actually like the kids suave brand, surfs up (great smelling).  It leaves his hair really soft with no tangles.

IMO, try out a bunch of different brands before you commit to the pricey version, it's not always worth it.

  • DS has eczema and uses Aveeno Baby stuff. J&J is highly scented and irritating to new skin.

  • J&J, at least in the american version, continues to use cancer causing chemicals in thier baby shampoo.  They do, however, remove it from the european version because their laws require them to.  I refuse to use any of their baby products.  I used and will be using again, CeraVe for the first few months.  My pedi recommended it when DS was born and it's super gentle and works wonders for sponge baths.  After that I used California Baby with DS and will do the same with this one as long as he doesn't react.  If you buy the large bottles the price really isnt that bad considering how long it lasts.

  • Does anyone know anything about the J&J naturals line? We received some as a gift so just wondering if that is any better than the original?

This.  We don't use it. I mostly use California Baby and some stuff I got from BabyCottons.

  • We use Burts Bees, Earth Mama Baby Angel, California Baby, and Kiss My Face.  They are more expensive, but I prefer to use natural, organic products.

  • We just use a bit of baking soda in the water to cleanse skin and hair. In terms of commercial products, there is lots of great info here: https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
  • Brand new babies really don't need soap - just warm water and a wash cloth. For when she is a little older, I like Dr. Bronner's Baby and Burt's Bees.

  • We used baby Aveeno with DS and loved it...we had some J&J from our shower so we used it up eventually but it didn't seem to moisturize his skin very well at all.  I did like the lavender bath wipes that someone gave me but I wouldn't have bought them on my own...sort of wasteful.

I was going to suggest the ewg skin deep site as well. I use it when I need to decide on new products for DD. We were using California Baby products but they changed their formula, so I think I'm going to go with Earth Mama Angel Baby when we finish up the bodywash we have. We use Aveeno lotion for DD and that seems to work ok for her. She has really sensitive skin and I'm pretty picky about what I put on and in her body.

  • Thanks for all the great advice on this thread....I never even knew that there were potential problems with J&J products. I'll definitely be exploring some of the other options mentioned.

  • We used J&J and Aveeno.  Aveeno is actually made by J&J...atleast in Canada anyway.

  • We use Cetaphil - it's not expensive, not a "soap" so it's non-drying, and has no harsh fragrances.  We now use Mustela for shampoo since DS has real hair, that's really just b/c we got a bottle at my shower & are still using it.

We only shampoo every other or 3rd night (unless he gets extra dirty).  We do a bath every night as part of the bedtime routine though (started that around 6months).  At the beginning we only did 2-3 baths per week.

For lotion we use Eucerin when necessary.

I've always used CA Baby or Burt's Bees for DS. I splashed out on some Mustela for NB's for this baby but will preobably have him sharing with his brother soon.

  • We use Mustela.

  • I like California Baby, but they recently changed their formulas to add a preservative that doesn't follow their organic formulas.  I currently use the bodywash/shampoo on my toddler and bought a large bottle before the formula change.  I haven't decided how much the preservative bothers me as to whether I'll buy it again if I run out.

Johnson and Johnson gave my daughter a rash the only time we tried it.

  • I have a Mustela and Cali baby as my primary skin and hair care for LO already and I would also use Cetaphil or Aquaphor.

  • I bought Mustela for the baby. I will also probably use Cetaphil because that is my go to.
