Natural Birth

raspberry leaf tea?

I?ve been lurking on this board for a couple of months and I?m currently planning to have an unmediated birth.. As a FTM, I want to do whatever I can to prepare for labor and make things progress as possible. I was looking into raspberry leaf tea, but noticed it?s high in vitamin A. Is this dangerous to take late in pregnancy or have you health care providers okayed it?

Re: raspberry leaf tea?

  • It's actually recommended late in pregnancy, not to put you in labour, but to help your uterus be a more effective muscle during labour (whenever it happens) and hopefully shorten your labour with more effective contractions. Talk to your Dr/MW and if you do try it and find you get a sudden increase in BH, stop drinking it or drink it less often. (I mention this last bit because I had wanted to start but developed an irritable uterus so now I can't).

  • My MW asks her patients to drink a whole quart of RRL, nettle, and alfalfa tea every day of the pregnancy, so her opinion is that it is just fine.
  • Im taking the hypnobabies course and they mentioned researching a supplement from "Nature's Sunshine" called 5W. (And of course talking with an herbalist or your MW/OB before startign anything like it) 5W stands for 5 weeks because you start taking it 5 weeks before your due date and it's supposed to tone and 'ripen' your cervix.

I've been looking into RRL tea, too! I've read a lot of women swear by it for labor and reduced afterpains, when taken properly.

Isn't the type of vitamin A in RRL tea would be a carotenoid and not a retinyl?  The type of vitamin A that is risky is the type that is in meat.  Obviously your dr/midwife would probably be the best person to confirm that, but beta carotene doesn't convert to vitamin a unless your body needs it to.

  • I'm starting raspberry leaf (capsules b/c quantity is important, and I'm bad at remembering/getting around to drinking the tea) at 12 weeks, per my MW.  I started around 24-26 with my last pregnancy.  I really do think it helped me, despite not having any way of knowing what would've happened without it...but I had a fairly quick (10 hours) and easy delivery.  I feel like every single contraction counted and I was shocked by how "easily" I got to 8 cm (which is when I arrived at the hospital).
