3rd Trimester

For those who have (had) GD.... or high blood pressure...??

At the risk of sounding ridiculous, is extra weight gain for mom typical when having GD? I can't really find anywhere that says that, but it seems like a lot of GD moms do tend to carry extra weight during their pg's.or is that not true. ???

I haven't had my test yet and really, I'm sure it's fine. I just feel like my body is out of wack this time around. My sweet tooth was going crazy 2 months ago and I gained 10lbs. This past month I have been really careful about what I'm eating as well as portion control and this morning the scale showed me another 10lbs up (32lbs total now)!!! Most of that happened in about a 2-2.5 weeks span. I about cried. I feel like I am just ballooning up so quickly.  My feet are swelling already (not terrible, but noticeable for me), my thighs/butt and arms are blowing up overnight. I wouldn't consider my diet to be high in salt and I drink 100+oz of water a day.

Are these typical signs of GD? Or maybe high blood pressure? I've never had either so I don't really know. I'm just trying to find some explanation for this past months gain (the month before I totally blame on the food).  I'm totally dreading my Drs appt. this week.

i have high blood pressure but not GD. I havent gained much. I think it's been 7 pounds the entire pregnancy and im 30 weeks. Sweets could just be your craving. Youd gain tons of weight if you indulged,

  • I think it seems extra weight for women with GD may be typical because being overweight in the first place can be a risk factor. However, I was underweight to average weight my whole life, and I still developed GD. Often times weight has nothing to do with it. I don't see how you could possibly gain too much weight while on the GD diet as it's so structured with carbs. I am 29 weeks and I have been on the diet for eight weeks now, and have only gained five pounds over those last eight weeks. Most of my weight gain (17 pounds so far) came from the first trimester, before I was diagnosed. And my sugar levels were fine then, as I had my A1C levels checked and that goes back three months. And no, I have no swelling or high blood pressure. Those tend to be related to pre-e, which sometimes can be seen with GD.
  • I have GD(2nd time around) I was 10 pounds lighter when I got pregnant this time around- still got GD. I started at 130, so no while being overweight doesn't help your chances it can really happen to anyone. It doesn't matter if you have a sweet tooth that has nothing to do with GD. Around 30 weeks your placenta produces a hormone that affects your natural insulin- some bodies can handle it others can't simple as that.

Some risk factors for GD are over age 26, overweight or diabetes in your family.

like PP said pre-e can go in conjunction with GD that is why you are considered high risk and have every 2 week apps at doctors-so they can monitor it. HTH

This sounds more like pre-eclampsia than GD to my not-a-doctor self.  I recently got a lecture about all the signs and symptoms because my blood pressure spiked while I was sick so they were watching me pretty closely.  In my case, I was fine but it might be worth a call to the dr.  My understanding was the rapid weight gain/swelling is something they wanted to hear about if it happened to me (but every dr is different.)
  • I've had GD with both pregnancies.  With my first, I wasn't eating enough to support the pregnancy and myself so they stuck me on some wicked calorie intake and I ended up gaining 25lbs.

With this one, I really made sure I was eating well and I've gained 15 so far.  Probably end up gaining 25 in the long run as well.

  • I have GD. I was overweight to begin with and when I got diagnosed w/ GD at 28 weeks I had only gained 10-12 lbs. Now, at 35w5d, I'm up 16-17 lbs. I'm gaining 1-2 lbs a WEEK at this point .... they keep telling me at this point in pregnancy its normal, but seeing that number rise SO drastically week to week is kicking my psyche.
