After my baby showers, I took all of the clothes and organized them by size (nb, 0-3, 3-6. etc). When LO came a month early, we hadn't washed anything and weren't ready, so I asked my mom to grab the bags of nb and 0-3 stuff to wash and get ready, putting the rest in storage. We're quickly approaching the 3 month mark, and I can tell he'll be going into a bigger size soon, so I went back through the clothes to reorganize the pile that had grown bigger after he was born. I just now realized that I put all of the Carter's "3"s in with the 3-6 month clothes, since it said 3! So now I have a huge pile of clothes that LO can fit into for a few weeks because I'm dumb and didn't realize 3 meant 0-3! What a FTM mistake!

Re: Curse you Carters!
I still don't fully understand the difference.
Uhoh.
I go by the weight now (if they're nice enough to include it). I always thought that was a ridiculous way to size a baby before I actually had a kid.

And Target's brand Circo tends to run big!
Which is perfect for my LO cause she is super small! They're the only thing that fit her!
I think it depends on the child, my kids are in above the 97% for height but at most the 25% for weight. Circo runs small for us. The Carter's brand at Target also runs small while the Carter's brand at Walmart (DS received sleepers from there) run very big, longer than the regular Carter's sleepers. Carter's typically run small for DS. The Okie Dokie brand from JCP runs large. Gymboree runs larger, he typically is his age in their clothing. Crazy 8 runs slightly smaller than Gymbo even though it is the same company, still runs bigger than other companies.
I never go by weight and always height because the children are so tall. I always sized the clothing by length in the drawers. It is easier to take the too short things out when I do laundry. Eventually, you will figure out what brands work best for your child; it took me until DS was a year old to realize that he was getting 6 months out of his Gymboree clothing (and now he's working on 9 months which is fantastic for children's clothing) so I don't mind paying extra for such a long life and his entire wardrobe is Gymboree now. He can still wear his 18-24 month clothing from there but he has daycare jeans from OshGosh and Carter's and he's in a 3T. I bought all of his shorts in 2T from Gymboree at the end of last summer and they fall off his butt. Also remember each child is different. For DS, Carter's ran small in height and by 2 months old he was in 6M clothing but DD is still fully in 3M. It seems to fit her better than it ever did for him. The clothing sizes are annoying and once you figure out their game it makes life simpler. Explaining it to grandmothers doesn't work. MIL constantly buys clothing too small for DS. She has not bought one outfit that actually fit him since he's been born. She goes by weight only (hence why I don't ever tell her his weight) doesn't look at height because her boys were short, she's short, her other grandchildren are short (her oldest is 6 years old and DS is only 4" shorter than him).
OP: Don't worry I did the exact same thing only I was the one to buy the clothing. I remember DS and I went shopping before my maternity leave ended, he was about 5 or 6 weeks old, to the Carter's outlet and Gymboree outlet. I bought DS a Gymbo outfit in 3-6 months and some Carter's outfits in 6M for summer thinking he wouldn't wear them for a little while. Well he wore right away and by June when he turned 3 months he already was too big for them and outgrew the Carter's outfits. I was at Carter's every 6 weeks to buy more clothing his first summer. He was outgrowing the 12M size in length by the time he was 6 months old. That's when I realized that I bought some Gymboree rompers in 6-12 months when he was 3 months old that he was still wearing in October. Meanwhile I was spending $60 at least every 6 weeks because we had no clothing.
