1st Trimester

How did you deal with near-constant nausea??

I am almost 10 weeks now, and have been dealing with nausea for the last 4 weeks, and been actually throwing up almost every day for the last 2 weeks.  It sucks.  My doctor prescribed me some pills for it, but they knock me out so I have been taking them at night before bed, I also got some Emetrol, but I've noticed it doesn't really help any.  Also noticed that the directions on the bottle say to repeat the dose every 15 minutes! No wonder it doesn't help!  I have to be careful with brushing my teeth, because more often than not, that is actually what activates my gag reflex and causes me to be "bowing to the porcelain god" so-to-speak.  Anywho! I was just wondering how you gals combated your nausea, what helped, what didn't?  And did you feel better when you hit your 2nd trimester mark??  Thanks!

  • I'd recommend Yogi brand (or any brand really) lemon ginger tea. It really helps me.

Also for the teeth, I got toothpaste that's citrus flavored and I brush in the shower. A little weird, yes, but it seems to help. Also, when brushing, spit a lot so the foamy stuff doesn't build up, that always gets me.

Lots of people recommend ginger ale, but I really don't like it.

I suck on hard candy a lot during the day. It does not solve the problem, but I think it helps some. I hear you about the teeth brushing...same for me!

  • I'm not as far along, but I've had the exact same problem. I didn't start actually throwing up until a few days ago, but now it seems like it has to be an everyday thing, some days multiple times. I've gone down the list: peppermint candy, sea bands, decaf tea,, ginger ale...all with not much luck. Yesterday, a friend suggested lemons. I tried last night and it really seemed to help. So much so that I was able to eat a whole bowl of soup. I'm sticking with that for now.

    Good luck!

Ugh, I'm sorry you have this too! It's really awful. I've had it pretty bad since about 5 1/2 weeks, though it is  starting to fade a bit now.  At the worst of it, I was throwing up 8 times a day.  During that time, a few things actually did help.

Ginger. I literally chopped it up and chewed on it. It was a miracle. A short-lived, spicy miracle. Each piece only helped for a few minutes but it was worth it! I kept a bag of sliced up pieces with me and even near my bed when I slept, so when I woke up in the middle of the night I could reach for it.

B6. If you haven't tried this, ask your doctor about it! I think it took the edge off.

Maalox. Okay, I don't know if this helped, but it's recommended where I'm living (in Italy).

Small meals. I know that's the basics but I do think it really helped. I lived off of saltines for a couple of weeks. I often was throwing up saltines, but it could have been worse.

Hydrate! If you get breaks from the nausea, drink water. I really think it helped me after I absorbed it.

I also wear seabands. I wear them every day, but I think they just make me think about 80's workout videos while I puke, but some people like them a lot!

Rest, and lights out if possible when it's at it's height.

    Good luck. This will

  • With Ds my Dr prescribed Zofram (I think this was the name?) which is a pill that literally kills nausea. I rec it. GL mama, hopefully it'll be smooth sailing for you soon!

  • I was so sick weeks 5-12; constant,y nauseous, vomiting multiple times a day. Sea bands helped some. But any other remedies didn't do squat. I even got sick on zofran! The best thing that helped me was resting when I felt sick. Although, it also messed up my sleep pattern. I was working full time, but had to take a "break" from work (read: leave).

I started feeling A LOT better at exactly 12 weeks. I do have some nausea, but my symptoms have morphed into dizziness instead.  I hope you feel better soon!

  • Some of the others have mentioned Zofran, and that's the only thing that's helped me so far. I was constantly sick and threw up a few times before I got the prescription but within 15 mins of taking it, I felt so much better. It may not work for everyone, but for me it's a miracle drug! I take 4mg at a time, and it dissolves under the tongue. I take it about every 4-6 hours, or as needed if I'm not feeling too bad. If your doctor will prescribe it, it wouldn't hurt to try it and see if it helps you. Hand in there and good luck! :)

  • Mine was constant for the first few weeks & it had finally started to subside until this week..now it's just an all day thing. I found some ginger gum at the drug store & it is for motion sickness & morning sickness & it helps to take the edge off but not 100% getting rid of the problem. I also got "Preggie Pops" at the maternity store & they helped some too! Good luck!
  • The only thing that has helped me is grazing, all day long! I don't eat meals, I just a few bites here and there. It seems as long as my stomach isn't empty, I feel ok. My only obstacle I haven't figured out is how to take me prenatals without gagging.

I really hope the relief comes with the 2nd trimester, or sooner!!

    GL :)

  • This is my third pregnancy, and I'm 8 weeks...the only thing that really has seemed to help this time around is eating all day long. Grazing on whatever sounds good keeps me from throwing up, but doesn't make nausea go away. I was prescribed pills w/ both my DD, they didn't help much. Cutting and squeezing a fresh lemon in ice water, that helps. For my first...Dr. Pepper helped. For my second...lemonade. I don't like ginger, so that just made me sicker lol. Hard candies (preggie pops are just hard candies) or suckers, all day long...the minute you aren't eating/sucking on them the nausea is back full force, but it's a small break.
Lots of cold water, sipping on it all day seems to help. Peppermint tea with a little honey is soothing too. I've heard peach syrup, coke syrup, etc. I think each lady is different, so just try a few things out.

Take your prenatals at night with a B6 (I think it does help a little to make the nausea a little less severe) and get into bed right away.  Resting with the lights out, a cool washcloth on your forehead may help too.

WIth my DDs, I was sick until about 4-5 mos in, and then again at the end, and some people are sick the whole time...but most people will feel better during hte 2nd tri. It's not far off!

    GL mama, it will pass!
