WDYT of the name Wylie?

I found this name on Nameberry and its growing on me...Part of me loves it, the other half of me thinks in a classroom it could get confused with Riley (which seems to be a popular name in my region)

I think Wylie Coyote. It kind of reminds me of Wyatt and Riley smooshed together.

I think of Wile E Coyote and Dr. Wily from the Mega Man series.

    I know this is strange.

This was my ex-husband's first name, though he went by his middle name.  It was an old family last name (so was his middle name, AND he was a junior--they were very wealthy and VERY pretentious).  But he even joked about the coyote reference.  Not a huge fan, but I divorced him for a reason, so I'm probably biased.Cool

I've always liked this name.  I have an ex-boyfriend named Wylie.  I also think of Seth Green's character from the movie Airborne.  His name was Wylie.

  • Love it! DH has a good friend John Wiley (spelled this way) that goes by Wiley. I have a great association with the name...he is such a great man.

  • It seems like it would be a good nickname for something, but I can't think of what. I'm on the fence about liking it as a full name. I think I like the spelling Wiley better. It looks less feminine.

The only concern I'd have with using it is that I might think a two-year-old saying it was trying to say Riley but couldn't pronounce his Rs yet.

  • Reminds me of coyote too. Also it's a common last name, not a first name.

  • Don't like it. Reminds me too much of the word wily which has a negative connotation
The waste in life lies in the love we have not given, the powers we have not used and the selfish prudence that will risk nothing; and which shirking pain, misses happiness as well. Mary Cholmondeley
  • DH's name is Wiley and he loves it. It was a family name.

Yes, people have made the Wile E. Coyote association with him, but he just ran with it. He still has a pair of rocking Wile E. Coyote slippers and a Wile E. Coyote throw blanket. That being said, if you have a strong dislike Wile E. Coyote or the Looney Toons, I would stay away from it.

As for a "negative" association with "wily" it means crafty or cunning. My DH is a little mischievious, so it suits him pretty well.

It makes me think of the coyote. I would have a hard time taking a Wylie seriously.

  • Another vote for the coyote here.

It sounds like Riley with a lisp.

I just want to reinforce this point:

    wil?y

full of, marked by, or proceeding from wiles;  crafty; cunning.

It reminds me of Mr. Coyote, and also sounds nicknamey. I like Wyatt better.

Not strange to me! He was my fave skater ever (I'm also a skater) and we actually named my cat Wylie back in 1996. So I totally get you.

However, I don't like it for a human first name.

  • I instantly think of the graphic novel and the movie Coraline when I see this name. Wylie is her friend in the movie.

  • This is my name though I have the english spelling Wiley and Wylie is the scottish spelling, just so you know. Also the original meaning is 'meadow'.

It was my grandmother's maiden name but I am proud to have it as my first name. I've so rarely ever run into other Wileys but when I do we always have a laugh and share mutual love for our name.

As for Wile E. Coyote yes very many kids of my generation immediately tried using this to make fun of me growing up but was wasted on their part as I already liked the character and saw early on how stupid other kids were. (on a side note a number of kids that had treated me like this later confessed they had been jealous of the uniqueness of my name when their's was vastly more common like mike, steve, dave, ect)

If the name rubs you wrong then simply don't use it, that way it remains special for those who do like it.

  • I'm not a fan, but it's not terrible.
