Question stemming for the solids post...

I noticed some moms already giving solids at four months. My question isn't food related but water related. When do you gals give your lo's water? Not a lot of course, but an ounce?? My mom is insisting on giving my lo an ounce a day of water but I'm hesitant since some reading has suggested waiting since they get water from milk...

  • No need to give water. That's another old school idea. In fact, too much water can lead to failure to thrive because is makes them not hungry. Most people start offering a sippy with water when they start solids.

  • My pedi told me to give lo water esp. in the summer months where they will loose water due to the heat.  Now that I said that I haven't given her any yet but I'm sure I will once we start spending more time outdoors.

I live in florida where it's summer most of the year and this is incorrect. I would worry about any pediatrician that told you this since it can cause problems. They get all the fluid they need from formula and/or breastmilk. Both are made up of water.
