Cinnamon & Diaper Rash?

My in law's watched DD yesterday and they gave her pureed apples with cinnamon.  I knew they had bought them & gave them the OK to give it to her.  I also said twice that she has never had cinnamon before and to keep an eye on her for a reaction.

When I came to pick her up after work they told me she had a bit of a diaper rash and that they had to use ointment (they give me a blow-by-blow of the day every time they watch her - it's really cute).  My MIL was sick so FIL took care of her most of the day.

Well, when I got her home & changed her diaper her bottom was so red and she cried the whole time I changed her because it hurt so much.   She's been a little red before but never this bad.  I felt terrible for her gave her tylenol to try to ease the pain.

Could it have been a reaction to the cinnamon?  I can't imagine she sat in a diaper for so long that it gave her that bad a rash - my in laws usually really good at taking care of  her (and do so at least once a week).

TIA!

  • DD1 had cinnamon for the first time around 9ish months and she got a slight rash on her face and hands where it touched her skin, so I don't think it's too much of a stretch to think it could also cause a diaper rash. Luckily a reaction to cinnamon is pretty common in the first year or so and most kids outgrow it, so we waited a few months and re-introduced it with no more issues. Hopefully the same will be true for your LO :)

  • We gave cinnamon around 7 months and DD got red wherever it touched her skin. I don't recall it ever giving her a rash. This week I put some cinnamon on her carrots and she did fine with it. Maybe hold off until after the rash is gone and try again in a month or so??
