ntr: Migraines

Do any of you suffer from migraines? I get headaches once or twice a month and get migraines every now and again. Today i had one so bad that i was repeatedly sick, i was so weak, i couldn't stand any noise or light. I couldn't hold down food or medicine, so i had to ride it out and sleep it off. Any advice for next time on what i can do to help it going away and to make me feel better?

Re: ntr: Migraines

  • If DH can watch LO, I usually take exedrin migraine and a niquil  cocktail and hibernate.

  • I used to take excedrin migraine, but I was taking it too often and ended up with rebound headaches/migraines which are a b*tch to get rid of. I now take 600mg of ibuprofen and that does the trick and I try not to do that more than a couple times a week to avoid future rebounds. I also try to catch it early before it reaches debilitating levels. Benadryl can help for nausea so you could try that and sleep it off with an ice pack too.

  • I started getting migraines last summer. I'd get one or two a month. I finally broke down and saw my Dr who gave me a prescription for pain meds and since then I haven't had any migraines. It's been nearly three months. I'm wondering if it was a stress/anxiety thing and having the meds is all I needed to make them go away.

Anyway, I would take Excedrine migraine before, but it didn't do anything for the pain. The only thing that helped was sleep and quiet. I tried a little caffeine right when I felt one coming on and that would sometimes take a little of the edge off, but not nearly enough to suggest it.

    Good luck with your headaches!

  • I only had like two migraines ever..the 1st time i just laid on the floor and cried ha ha  but anyway last time I had one about a year ago............DH got an apple, cut off two slices, stuck them on my eyelids..and I swear to god the pain immediately stopped.

I thought he was crazy but someone at work told him about it............i want to try it again to see if it would work again...but I don't want a migraine!!!!!! ha ha

  • I've had them for 15 years now, they used to be several times a month. Now, maybe once every month or two but they last 2-3 days. I used to be on a prescription that prevents them, low dose Elavil, but stopped that when I got pregnant. Surprisingly I only got 1 or 2 the whole time I was pregnant or bfing ( yay hormones!). When they started to come back after I weaned, I tried acupuncture and it has been miraculous. I've had maybe 2 small ones since Dec. (small like manageable with advil, only lasting 1-2 days). Highly recommend acupuncture!! Good luck, migraines are terrible.

  • Ibuprofen products add to the nausea for me. I get the CVS brand migraine med (acetominiphen + caffiene) and that takes care of me - since I started using a couple of months ago, I've been able to get rid of mine before it got bad, and it doesn't make me all sleepy like my scrip did.

  • I'm also on Imitrex. I keep them in my purse so that as soon as I can tell I'm getting one, I can take one. I also will have a Coke. If I don't catch it soon enough, then sleeping in a dark room is about the only thing that will help.

Like the others have said, definitely talk to your doctor about them. They're awful!

  • i got them all the time in high school, then they thankfully disappeared.  i've just started getting them again, and it sucks.  they're definitley stress related and much more likely to occur the week before my period.  anyway, cold compress on eyes, tylenol pm (or something stronger) and bed are the only things that make them go away.

Fluck excedrin migraine. It's the same thing as regular excedrin and never did anything for my actual migraines. Day-to-day headaches, sure. Migraines require heavier shiit for me.

Talk to your doc about a prescription triptan like Imitrex. You'll need to take it immediately so that you can keep it down. My brother gets the nausea really bad with his migraines and I believe there is a dissolvable version...don't quote me on that. You may also need an anti-nausea med to take before the migraine pill; I do know that Zofran comes in dissolvable form. GL!

  • I'm sorry you're going through this.  It took me years of suffering them daily to work it out.  Sorry if I'm a little long-winded here, but I would rather tell ya everything I got. ;)

    1.  Try to find the source of the migraines.  For me, it is a bulging disc in my neck, so that will color the rest of what I'll say.

    2.  Ice on my neck really helps.

    3.  For me, I have to watch out what position I put myself in (not scrunching down on the couch with my laptop, for example).

    4.  I have tried many prescription drugs; they leave me high/hungover, and take many hours to work.

    5.  Excedrin Migraine works well for me, but I'm still BFing, so it's not allowed (due to the aspirin).  Of course, like all drugs, the earlier the better.

    6. Now I take 3 tylenol (not advil) with one cup of coffee (not a latte).  I must take them at the same time.  Works within about a half hour.

    7.  Migraines are the result of constricted blood vessels in the brain.  Sometimes a luke warm bath with Epsom salts (a lot, like 2 cups) can help because the magnesium in the salts dilates blood vessels.

    HTH!  Feel better.

All this, and I went to see a neurologist who put me on Topomax as a preventative medication.  It has helped SO much.  I was getting them about 2 weeks out of the month after DD was born.  Weather changes and hormonal fluctuations cause mine.  Also, if I get a bad one Percocet is the only thing that will help.  OTC meds won't make a dent in them.  I try not to take it b/c it's addictive, etc, but omg it helps so much.  Last time I had to take one it felt like someone wrapped a warm blanket around the migraine and turned it off.  I have to take it with anti-nausea medicine (the dissolvable kind) or I will have no headache but I'll be nauseated all day.  Luckily, with the Topomax I haven't had a migraine in well over a month.  I hope you find a solution.  GL!

have you seen a neurologist or do you take prescription meds? i dont know how often you have them. i have actually never had a textbook migraine, but had severe chronic headaches (literally almost everyday) for over a year after DD was born. i saw a neuro and had an MRI and everything was fine. but they did prescribe daily meds. you could talk to your doctor. what they gave me was amitryptaline (sp?) which is commonly used for depression but can also help headaches, but it made me severely fatigued. i do know that another option (especially for migraines) is topomax, which is commonly used for seizures, but also for migraines/headaches. GL - i hope it gets better
  • I get them and it always seems to be around ovulation or 3-4 before my period. I know they are hormone related. I am a teacher and they always start at work in the middle of the school day. Ahh I heave learned 4 ibuprofen and a coke help if I can catch them. I will be going to dr this summer thiugh to talk to him. I used to take imitrex and I hate it. It made me sicker.
