Gatorade??

I have never been interested in gatorade. Even working my butt off as a competitive cheerleader, I'd never had an interest. I am now 6 weeks pregnant with my first child and I'm wondering whether gatorade is safe? I have been craving red gatorade constantly for about a week and I've been drinking 1 or 2 small ones a day. I figured it was probably ok, but my mom expressed concern about the sodium. What do you think?

Re: Gatorade??

  • I read somewhere it is but it's also high in sugar.

  • Like PP said, I'd be more concerned about the sugar if drinking it every day.

Overall though, I don't think there is anything wrong drinking it, if you are craving it.

This is a great suggestion.  I would be more concerned about the sugar content than the sodium but unless you eat completely clean, you are probably consuming other foods that are high sugar and/or high sodium.

The problem with this is if you're eating a lot of high sugar/high sodium foods it's really best to completely avoid drinking excess sugar/sodium. If you're eating fairly well balanced then it's easier to say "sure, have a gatorade when you're craving one." G2 contains artificial sweeteners (splenda & acesulfame potassium) which I'm avoiding, I'd rather drink a moderate amount of real sugar than the fake stuff.

My vote goes for drinking 1 serving (check the bottle, it's likely only half) a day to satisfy your craving.

Great point about the artificial sweeteners!  I completely forgot that it probably contained those instead.    With that in mind, I agree that a moderate amount of regular Gatorade is probably a better option.

  • I have been very sick, so my OB actually suggested Gatorade, so that you get some sustenance. He told me I'd be okay as long as I didn't have any in the 3rd trimester because of the sodium content.

Something else you may try is coconut water.  It does similar things to your body as Gatorade (balances electrolytes, etc.), but it's SO much better for you.

Just something people might be interested in since a lot of us will be dealing with M/S for a while :)
