Its time again for our weekly check-in. This check-in is for anyone dealing with clotting disorders, or for anyone doing once or twice daily shots of Lovenox, Heparin, Clexane, Fragmin, Arixtra, etc. (you are also welcome if you are on any other blood thinners - coumadin, aspirin, etc.) This is a place for us to share our frustrations, worries and triumphs. What?s new this week? How is everyone feeling? How are your bruises? Here is a link to our injection tips, https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/57294711.aspx

If this is your first week checking-in, please let us know your EDD and the reason you are on blood thinners. (If you have checked in before but have not been added, it is likely because you didn?t give your EDD or the reason you are on blood thinners.)
QOTW: Its been about 6 months since we've done this, so lets post injection tips for the newbies!

I do most of this, but I skip the ice now. It doesn't seem to help me much. Also, as I got bigger I had to move a larger distance from my belly button. I am 24 weeks and can't inject while laying down, I have to sit up to be able to pinch the skin. The baby kicks the whole time I'm injecting. Very strange.

There were a couple of times that I injected and it didn't hurt at all and I don't know what I did differently because it usually hurts/burns. Maybe it was the injection spot.
I try to do it slowly but still get a teeny droplet of liquid that comes up at the injection point after I remove the syringe. Any tips for that? Just do it even more slowly? I don't leave the needle in for 10 seconds afterwards, I kinda just want it done with... maybe that's what I'm doing wrong?
I traveled w/ my lovenox for the first time last week. My home airport did an inspection of it, but it didn't take long and they told me thanks for separating it out from the rest of my carryon. I took 6 pre-filled syringes and all the accouterment plus put one of the prescriptions in there as well in a small zippered pouch. I had a small plastic bottle that I kept my empties in and took it back with me (checked that part). The TSA at the airport on my way back didn't ask to inspect it. So wasn't a big deal, thanks everyone for the tips on that.

99 days left!!! Yay!!
Things are getting tighter and more difficult as my belly stretches. My doctor insisted I continue to poke my belly so I just have to find the fat. Today was by far the most painful injection since I started, and right now it doesn't look like it's gonna bruise and it was the first time I used ice afterwards.
I don't do anything special. I switch sides everyday I steer clear from bruises, but I've been fairly lucky with bruising. Swab with alcohol, blow on the spot & let it dry while I get the injection ready, and then I make sure I have a good handle in a fatty spot and poke at a very slight diagonal. I do not jab the needle, and inject as quickly as I can without being painful. If it gets painful I slow down.
Doing pretty good, already needing a new monthly prescription as of end of next week.(Trying to count down the pregnancy by monthly prescription pick ups
)
Feeling pretty good to, sometimes I bruise and sometimes I do not. I feel that when I go into less fatty spots I do not bruise as much but it hurts more when the needle goes in. I can handle the pain and brusies as long as I finally get my baby in 6 and half months
Thanks for mentioning air travel with injectable thinners! I travel often with mine and have never had the TSA inspect my bags. I just put them through in my luggage and no one ever says a word about it. I also have an EPI pen that travels with me everywhere in my purse. I do make sure to keep the thinners in their box with a perscription label on the outside, just in case. I don't anticipate any trouble. Of course, I've never attempted to travel through Customs with them, but with the perscription label and an appropriate quantity for your trip I wouldn't anticipate any trouble.
As far as that extra droplet, that does happen to me occasionally as well. I have had my Factor Xa Assy test several times, and my range has always been still in the theraputic dose. I guess all that says is that for me, that little drop doesn't seem to matter.

Hi, ladies! I had my baby on Sunday, 2/12. Need to update my ticker! Went into labor about 30 min after my morning heparin shot that Saturdy, as luck would have it. By the time labor progressed to the point that I was ready to go to the hospital, and they did the whole admission process and coag panel to be sure the heparin was out of my system, I was cleared for the epi anyway. Thank goodness! Labor and delivery went really wel and the whole process was 1,000x easier than it was with my daughter. Baby Andrew is perfect and such a mellow baby. We are busy settling into life as a family of four now. My daughter is having some jealousy issues but it's getting better day by day.
QOTW: Not much to add to the tips mentioned already. Injecting sloooowly seems to be key for me.
This happens to me sometimes, too! I've been considering marking that injection site with a permanent marker, lol, so I can go back to it as soon as it's healed up.
My tips: I always inject either sitting or laying down (usually sitting). I found standing there can be too much "wobble" in my legs while trying to stand perfectly still, or in my hand trying to be perfect, too. I have to inject twice a day, and my right side is my night side (it rhymes!) which has helped me to remember, especially in the beginning. I always make sure the beveled edge is pointing upwards, and always inject at a 90 degree angle to the skin (fat) that I've pinched. Then I inject fairly slowly, leave the needle in for a couple seconds, and pull it out. Sometimes it's a bleeder, so I always make sure to keep my alcohol swab until I'm done with the entire injection process.
Hi Gals! I finally have my due date! Our little pumpkin finally decided to show up on the u/s last night and we have been given 10/2 as our EDD. YAY!!! We had a nice strong hb of 155 and he or she looks great.
I don't have many tips, as I seem to be having a hard time with my heparin lately. Some nasty bruising and lots of stinging after. Thinking of letting DH try to inject me to see if it makes any difference. Anyone ever used their bum?
Hi girls!
Alana! Congrats!
I had my baby this Wednesday 2/15 by scheduled c-section. It was SUCH an amazing experience, and she's absolutely perfect in every way. Chloe Alexandria is finally here! I can't believe it!!
So, I'm back on lovenox now for 6 weeks postpartum. I've got to tell you, after doing the heparin shots, the lovenox seems like a breeze. LOL
QOTW - no real tips from me either. I'm a "jab and go" girl, too.
My belly is getting so big to the point that I can't see my sides well enough to give myself the shot. I'm only 26 weeks but I just can't do it very well. My husband has taken over that job but it's hard because our schedules don't mix sometimes and I need my shot twice a day.
QOTW: Its been about 6 months since we've done this, so lets post injection tips for the newbies! All I can say is, make sure the alcohol has dried COMPLETELY before you stick yourself. Sometimes I'll think it has dried and then stick too early and it pretty much makes you want to scream. Lately I've been using a cotton ball to dry the alcohol with. I don't use ice because it takes too long and I'm usually rushing to get it over with. But, if you are a first timer and are terrified of the idea of giving yourself a shot, ice might be a good start. I agree with very lightly poking around until you find a less sensative spot. Trust me, it will save you a lot of pain. As for the bruises, all you can do is avoid them. As you are injecting the medicine you'll easily be able to tell if you should slow down or not. If you are new and hate needles, don't worry, this will become second nature to you. In the beginning, I would dread shot time, but now it's like nothing. Just like taking a pill only with a bit of a sting. If you get a good spot on your skin, you can't even feel the needle going in or the medicine being injected. Thanks for the great tips. I am wondering if anyone has asked their doctor for some sort of topical analgesic to dull the pain of the injections? Maybe some topical lidocaine gel would help the experience to be more tolerable.
No I have not. that sounds like a good idea
I really dread my shots!
