Disability Insurance Question

Hi ladies,

I usually post on the OC board, but thought a lot of you may be knowledgeable about this...

I know it's kinda early to be worrying about this, but I like to plan ahead; espcially for work.  I'm a teacher and my babe is due June 19th, in time for summer break.  I'm planning to not take any maternity leave this school year, since school ends June 12th.

I have disability insurance and was told by the insurance company rep that they pay for maternity leave up to 12 months.  My DH is kinda wanting me to take one year off from work if disability will give me the nominal pay check.  Anyone have experience with this?  Will disability insurance only cover for 12 months if my doctor writes me up for the entire year?  And if not, can I at least use my 6 weeks of maternity leave September thru half of October, since the baby is coming after the school year ends, or will the 6 weeks not be applicable since it's 3 months after the baby comes?

TIA!

Re: Disability Insurance Question

  • Disability insurance is for true disability, not for "I don't feel like it."  If you want to take a year off, save up.

  • Disability insurance normally only covers you for medical reasons.  Also they don't just accept a note from your doctor saying you can't work.  I am currently trying to get 8 weeks instead of 6 weeks because of a c/s and my STD insurance is fighting it.  My doctor has to talk to them and explain that I can't work.
  • I'm a teacher as well (in LA) and I have a separate disability policy.  My policy only covers for medical reasons and I have to have my employer sign it as well.  I have been given the regular 6 weeks for a vaginal birth and because of back problems have been given an additional 7 weeks of disability (first I was given 3 weeks and now I've been given 4 additional), but I also have to go to physical therapy once a week.  I'm not sure if you can do it for a year at a time without technically being employed.  As for using your maternity leave for September and October I don't think my district will allow this.  You could take a "bonding with baby" leave but that's unpaid.  HTH!
  • You can not get disability if:

    1) You are not supposed to be working or receiving a paycheck (summer?).

    2) You are not disabled

No one is going to pay your salary for a year to sit on your bottom playing with your kid. Well maybe if you move to Canada.

  • And, no doctor is going to write you off for a year. What on earth for? That would be fraud and no reasonable physician is going to risk their license for that.
