Any mama's with celiac whose baby does NOT have celiac?

I have celiac.  I'm due June 16th.  Just curious if anybody is in this position of having it and their kids do not.

  • I do not.. but...

my next door neighbor has celiac and her DD1 (3 y/o) does not.  Her DD2 (4 months old) has not been tested yet.

One of my close friends found out her son (4 y/o) has celiac and neither parents have it.

  • See, it's funny.  They (Dr's, etc.) say it's hereditary, and that you HAVE to get it from somebody, but when we went for genetic testing back in Dec., the lady said that that is not always the case, that sometimes it can just appear.

So, it's very interesting to hear about others who have it, kids don't have it, or kids have it, but parent's don't have it!

If our daughter does have it, it's not the end of the world.  We are already used to the gluten free diet and all that stuff, and I know there is a lot worse she could have to deal with.  I guess I just hope for her little sake that she doesn't have it.  It would make her life a lot easier. :)  (And I know my husband is dying to have somebody to eat delicious gluten filled pizza with!)

We felt the same way about my sons allergies (milk, soy, eggs, nuts, sesame) and no one in our family has allergies on either side of the family.

Good luck! hope she doesn't have it.

  • DH and I haven't been genetically tested, but neither of us seem to have celiac, nor does anyone in our family - but our son does.

  • I was first diagnosed by endoscopy back in 4th grade.  A year later, they tested me again (after eating gluten free), and told me I didn't have it (which obviously, if I had been eating gluten free, I wouldn't have damage in my intestines).  Fast forward 15 more years of eating gluten, and many sinus issues and severe anemia and being hospitalized needing a blood transfusion, I had another endoscopy, and turns out I have had it all along.  I don't get all the stomach issues that most people have, so with that I am lucky.

Nobody else in my family appears to have it either (and nobody is really willing to go get tested, which I think is kind of stupid, but I guess that's just me).

  • I have celiac disease and 1 of my kids does not.  The other two do though.

I've heard that breastfeeding can help delay or maybe even prevent celiac disease.  But that didn't keep my DDs from having it.

  • My niece has it and my sister or her husband does not.  We are not sure where it came from!  Same with my DD, she is allergic to all nuts, eggs, and soy and there is nobody in the family with food allergies.

  • My DH has celiac disease, but I do not. My son and I both had genetic testing done and neither of us have the genetic markers for celiac disease. However, we are all on a gluten-free diet in our house because of my husband's celiac disease. The only time we eat gluten is when we are out of the house because eating gluten-free is so difficult at restaurants (and I miss gluten).
  • Parents who have kids with Celiac, but they do not, just might not be presenting symptoms yet. My husband was diagnosed 5 years ago, age 23, and his mother just started showing symptoms last spring, in her mid-50's.

I do wonder if it's more likely to be passed from a mother to a child than from a father, and whether the mother's diet or if she breastfeeds has anything to do with it. I know DH was not breastfed, and he has a few allergies from his mother. I still eat gluten when I'm not at home with DH, and I hope to breastfeed. I'll be interested to see if our LO has any food allergy issues.

This exactly.  I had no idea I had Celiac.  Once my second child showed the same problems with gluten that my first child did, I demanded testing from my GI.  He refused, saying I had none of the symptoms.  But I insisted, and lo and behold I have Celiac.  It can become "active" at any time, and the older you get, the more likely it is to crop up.  Lots of people aren't diagnosed until their 60s and 70s.

  • Very true.  I know they confirmed I had it by blood test (and I demanded an endscopy to be 100% sure haha - I'm a brat), so maybe I will have our daughter blood tested at an appropriate age to see if she is positive for it.

Interesting about breastfeeding possibly "preventing" it.  I had tried to find information on it to see if the 2 could be connected slightly, but that was like finding a needle in a haystack.

I know my Mother did not breastfeed me.

I do plan on breastfeeding LO, so we shall see.
