Babies: 6 - 9 Months

If your LO sleeps with a lovey/stuffed animal, etc...

DS is not a very good sleeper at all, but I'm just not ready to sleep train quite yet. One of his daycare providers asked if I let him sleep with a little stuffed animal or something that he can use to comfort himself. He has a bear with a little blanket attached (similar to this: https://www.amazon.com/Carters-Plush-Security-Blanket-Elephant/dp/B005537BKY/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1337303589&sr=8-15) , but I'm still a little nervous about letting him sleep with it at night. He moves all over the crib and often likes to sleep with his face pressed up against things, so I worry that it might get in his way. I'm probably overthinking this, I realize!

If you let your LO sleep with something to soothe them, what is it and does it seem to comfort them? Just curious!

  • We gave both our kiddos a lovey with a blanket attached  and they are very soothing for them. DS has a little elephant with a blankie body and whenever I put him down he does rub it on his face or press his face into it, which is what seems to soothe him. DD also has a bunny she sleeps with and when she starts getting sleepy she'll rub the bunny ears under her nose - clearly a way of self-soothing to sleep.

If your LO is 7 months I'd feel safe giving them a lovey or blanket at night. We've given DS one since he was 4 months.

She sleeps with a snoedle. It is meant to comfort because it holds your smell after sleeping with it a night. The reason I introduced it was so she had something she associated with bed time. Dd likes to sleep pressed up to things, but I trust that she can and will get out of a position that isn't good for her.

  • my son moves all around his crib and he has his sea horse and 3 stuffed animals and a blanket. He will move the stuffed animal all around the ctib and he will talk to them. his sea horse he can now press the belly and make it go on so in the middle of the night we will hear the sea horse. his blanket he has 3 of them, the one for the crib he snuggles with and chews on. Usually I find the blanket under him and part of it he is holding.  It is a self soothing mechinism for him untill all the stuffed animals are in their proper place and his blanket is just so he won't go asleep.

  • DD has a lovey like what you showed but it is an elephant and pink :)  She loooves it.  She started noticing she likes to cuddle with blankets when she would fall asleep in her carseat and pull up the blanket so it was touching her face.  So around 5m we let her start sleeping with the lovey.  She cuddles like crazy with it and absolutely loves sleeping with it.

I suggest buying a few of the same one so that if one is lost or you need to wash it, you have backup.  Some babies/children are super picky about the replacement and might not want it if it is not the same.  My niece being one of them :)  And buy now why they are reasonably priced.  I bought the elephant one when I was pg and didn't think about having back-ups until just a month or so ago.  Carter's no longer makes them or sells them in their stores so Ebay and Amazon are selling them for like $45 each!  I did find someone on Ebay who sold them to me for $15 :)

  • My LO adopted a blanket I've used since he first came home to cover him on chilly nights when he nurses as his blankie.  Makes sense in hindsight, but it caught me by surprised when I realized it (his face lit up one night when he saw it).  It makes a HUGE difference in his ability to self soothe.  I've noticed he tends to suck on it.  I second the pp that suggested getting multiples.  We have three and that allows for there to always be at least one clean one.

  • Dd has one from blankets and beyond-- called a muni and is a bear head attached to small blanket.  I have 3 including one at daycare.  She cuddles and sucks on the paws et

ETA: it is a "nunu" and I found on amazon

  • My daughter sleeps with a stuffed dolphin and a silky blanket. She will not fall asleep on her own without the silky blanket. She is about 7.5months and recently stopped using a paci. Now she cuddles with and chews on the blanket until she falls asleep.

DD has had a lovey in her crib since about 4 months.  It is definitely a method of self-soothing.  We have these.  I bought 3 of them just in case.  She rubs it over her face at night and tucks it under her belly at night.image

  • Smudgy has had blankets and stuffed animals in his crib since day one. He never moved and he hated being swaddled, so to keep him warm I had to give him a blanket.

I'm pretty sure once they can move things around/off of their face it's fine to let them have it.

  • My LO has been sleeping a bit in his crib (we mostly bedshare) with a blanket and his glow-worm...or glow-seahorse.  He really does wrap around it like he's hugging it to comfort him back to sleep.  It's pretty adorable.

  • DD has been sleeping with a lovey since about 5 months.  We were gifted several lovies, and I choose the smallest one to give to her.  She does like to fall asleep with it on her face, so I just keep an eye on her on the video monitor, and I usually move it away from her once she's asleep.

We take it to daycare everyday, too... she's very attached to it.

We use one of the Aden & Anais lovies. It's ridiculously thin, so I don't worry about it.

same here. they come in a pack of two, and even when ds covers his face with it I don't have to worry. They are awesome.
