Cloth Diapering

Would you buy used CD off Craigslist?

Hi everyone :)

I'm a FTM and DH and I are pretty set on CDing.  We're actually pretty excited about it.

Since we're so new, we don't really know what to expect.  I've been reading as much as I can, but there will always be things you don't know until you're experienced.

Last night I saw a post on CL for a lot of BumGenius stuff for $75, and I was looking for some feedback as to whether or not this would be a good idea.

I know it's common practice to buy used BGs from places like CottonBabies, but I wasn't sure how much trust I could place in someone off CL.

Here's the description...

Up for grabs is a lot of cloth diapers from Cotton Babies. My son is nearly potty trained and we only using trainers lately. We purchased these from Cotton Babies 18-24 months ago and have used them in a large rotation. They are in good used condition and show some typical wear but have lots of life left. A few have stains, but I have never tried to remove them with bleach or sun, so they may still come out. They have been washed according to the manufacturers instructions and are from a smoke and pet free home.

Included are:
6 Flip One-Size Covers
14 Stay Dry Flip Inserts
1 Organic Flip Insert
3 Econobum Covers
9 Econobum One-Size Inserts
2 bumGenius Elementals (One-Size, Organic)

TIA!!

For the main question- Yes, I would and I have. If you do your homework, can check them thoroughly in person and the seller answers your questions, it can be as good a deal as buying anywhere else. My first pocket diapers were ones sold on CL by a lady in my area and I learned a lot from her, in addition to getting a good deal on a new-to-me item.

The seller seems to have disclosed everything pertinent so all that's left is to look. Worst case, you don't want them and leave. If you haven't had your baby yet, and don't know what works for you, you may not be happy in the end, so that's always a crap-shoot. I'd haggle on the price since they are 2 years old and have staining. Good luck!

I have bought a large part of my stash from CL sellers without any problems.

That sounds like a very good deal.

  • I've bought and sold on CL.

That seems like a good deal and the seller is being honest.  You'll just check them out in person and make sure they are in good condition.  Stains are not a problem.  Then when you get them home, you can wash them with your detergent and 1/4 c of bleach to sanitize, and dry them in the sun, which should take the stains out.  If there are any stains left, rewet them and put lemon juice on the stains, sun them again, and then rewash with your detergent.

As long as the physical condition of them is good, that's a great deal.  The 2 BGs will run you $24.95 a piece new, and not too much less used.

  • I've bought from CL before and had good luck with it.  It's nice to save on shipping (and no tax) plus you have someone you can ask about the diapers.

The only question I'd have for you is: are you wanting to use Ai2s? If you're not sure you should probably do a trial to see what you like.  I think 9 Ai2 shells is a lot if you're not sure whether you'll like them (I could very well be alone in that opinion, though).

  • Sounds like a good deal to me, a nice selection for you to experiment with as a FT cloth user!  I would offer $65 and see what she says.  Cottonbabies brand items are always good quality, so hopefully they are still in good condition.

  • I have sold a LOT of diapers on craigslist.  You can always ask for pictures, and condition of the snaps/velro, stains, elastic, etc.  That way you know beforehand if they are in decent shape or not.  The post sounds like a good deal to me.

If you get something you end up not liking, you can always put it back for sale on craigslist or diaperswappers.

Also, the sun is amazing at getting out stains!!

  • All but 2 of my CDs have come from CL or eBay.  I think my stash is now upwards of 60-70 assorted diapers.

The only issue I've had is the 30 OS BGs that I bought that needed the aplix replaced.  The seller told me upfront that it needed to be done and had 25 repair kits.  I have a sewing machine so replacing it wasn't a big deal to me.

I have a sanitary cycle on my machine so all used diapers get washed on that cycle with a little bleach when I first get them and then go into the normal wash routine after that.

  • My first purchase was from CL. It was a great deal and they were in good shape. She actually threw in some free wool covers just because she was done cd and wanted to pass them on. She shared some cd info with me as well. I was happy with the transaction.
