so.... I let her "cry it out"

and it was AWFUL. we did this for about 2 hrs... of back and forth into her room to sooth her...and it got worse each time. she was HYSTERICAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   she literally was gagging and shaking!

She fell asleep in crib at 7:30, slept an hour..then woke up and cried until 11. We finally put her in her bouncy seat and she fell asleep!

 HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • That sounds pretty terrible. Could you rock her to sleep? Sometimes mine will just not calm down on her own so I spend about 15 minutes rocking her and she's out. Or maybe try a mobile to give her something to look at? I don't believe in "cry it out" so I don't have any advice other than to not do it.

  • That sounds horrible.  I'm sorry you had to do that.  I don't believe in crying it out, either, so I don't have any advice.  Is there anything else you can do?  I know our LO goes down once we rock her and soothe her for about 10-15 minutes.  You have to do what you think is right, but maybe look into other options.

  • I went back down and read your other post.  Is it possible she's overtired?  What time does she usually go to bed?  Have you tried earlier or later bed times?  How many hours does she sleep at night?  How well does she nap during the day?

  • I'm with PP..... sounds like she is overtired when you are putting her down. Once they reach that point, it's very difficult to get them to sleep. It's important for LO to be on a consistant nap schedule during the day to get the best sleep at night. I know that my LO doesn't always give the most obvious tired cues until it's "too late" and he won't go to sleep without a fight. Therefore, I normally put him down for a nap every 1 1/2 to 2 hours TOPS (I determine whether it's 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending on how long his last nap was). Once you get on a nap schedule and bedtime routine, you may find that LO will sleep better. Sometimes it seems unnatural, but it does work-- for the last nap of the day, even though it seems wacky, we usually wake LO up, lotion/bathe him, put on PJs,  give him a bottle, read, and go back to sleep.

Our rule of thumb for CIO is kind of go with what you feel... there are times where I allow LO to cry for a little longer period, but it depends on the kind of cry. There's the resisting sleep/whining cry and then there's the full out SCREAM. I would never allow him to do that for more than 5 minutes before I at least try the binky. In the sleep book we read, you should give it a total of an hour and if they aren't sleep within the hour then you should get them out of the crib. We will leave LO in the crib that long if he whines/talks to himself... but I personally wouldn't let him cry consistantly in the crib for an hour

  • We tried the CIO method one night....after 4 hours of fighting I caved in and rocked him to sleep like usual and he was out in 10 minutes. Every since that night he's been sleeping from 8-5:30 with no issues getting back up after being laid down for the night. Some babies will refuse to do the CIO method due to their temperament and personality.

  • Why did you feel like you had to let her cry it out?  Someone told you she should be sleeping through the night or something and that was the only way?  There are gentler ways that are easier on mama and baby than just leaving them to cry so hard they are gagging and shaking.

  • If she was getting more hysterical every time you went in to check then you may want to try not checking that is what we eventually did with DD because when we were doing checks like that she was just getting more excited. Also, don't give in and move them, pick them, etc because then you accomplished nothing and made them cry for x amount of time for NO reason and it will just be worse next time you do it because she now knows that eventually she will get what she wants if she keeps crying.

that makes me so sad for your baby. I personally would look at naps, bed time, etc, before continuing on that path.

    best of luck.
