Birth Stories

Zachary Robert

It all started on Feb. 14th when I got sick. My throat was so sore I could hardly even drink water. I was concerned about becoming dehydrated and asked DH to take me to emerg. They diagnosed a throat infection, prescribed antibiotics, and sent me on my way. I stayed home from work the rest of the week, not getting any better. In fact I got worse. It moved down into my chest. I couldn't eat, couldn't drink, couldn't talk. It was all I could do to get those little pills down. On Friday afternoon I e-mailed my boss to tell him that I was still really sick and that I might as well just start my Mat leave early b/c I didn't want to go back and risk getting everyone else sick too. (I work in a small dental office so even one employee being off is hard on everyone.)

My DH works afternoons and that day before he left for work, he asked me if I wanted him to stay home with me. I said no because there really wasn't anything he could do for me. I regretted this decision. By 8 pm I started to have a really bad coughing attach. It got so bad I started to be sick to my stomach. Then I realized that I was throwing up blood!

I tried to call DH but got no answer on his cell and when I called his work he never answered the page. I could hardly talk to the person that answered the phone anyway. So I called my Daddy. All he heard from me was "blood" and "hospital". My parents were at my house in less then 10 minutes. When I finally calmed my Mom down, "The baby is fine, I'm not having the baby today!" (I knew she would freak out and that's why I called my Dad) we then left for emerg for the second time that week. I just managed to send DH a text letting him know what was going on when my phone died. I hoped he would get it and meet us there. He works over an hour away.

When I got to the hospital, it was the same nurse from the other night. It was good because I didn't have to do too much explaining. She hooked me up to all kinds of monitors and took some blood. DH then showed up (thank you!) so my parents went home.

They then started running all kinds of tests, and I kept having coughing attacks. They were concerned that it could be a blood clot or pneumonia. Around 2 am Saturday, I started to have what I thought to be Braxton hicks contractions and very mild cramps. It wasn't painful at all but my stomach would get all hard. I mentioned them to the nurse, and she asked us to time them. They were 3-4 minutes apart. They then didn't know what to do with me. They didn't want to send me up to L&D because they still didn't know what I had, but I couldn't have my baby in emerg either. Finally, at 7 am they ordered a CT Scan for 9 am, so they decided to send me to L&D to get checked while I waited for 9 am. They put me in isolation away from the other babies and Mommas and hooked me up to the monitors. Yup, I was having contractions. Strong ones too tho they still weren't very painful. I had had more pain from period cramps. Then they checked me. I was 5 cm dialiated already! I believe my words were, "Oh Sh!t". Nice. Untill that point I still didn't believe I was in active labour.

At 9 am I had my CT Scan that came back clear. It turns out that I just had a really bad chest infection. Isolation was lifted, and the doctor said, "Let's have a baby!" They asked about my pain level and if I wanted an epi. I could still tolerate the contractions but there was no way I wanted to go natural, so I asked for the epi. It was placed about 12 pm and I was checked again. 7 cm. I slept for about an hour then they broke my waters. I slept again for about another hour saying to DH that I had better get it in while I ca. At 2:15 pm they started pitocin and I told the nurse that my epi was wearing off and that I had to pee. She decided to drain my bladder and then check me again before topping up my epi. When she checked me she was surprised and said "the head is right there!" The next thing I know, the room is full of people and I am told to push.  I started to push and had another gush of water shoot out! I felt so bad, it sprayed the nurse! Less then 10 minutes later my son came into the world crying and peeing! The floor was so wet the one nurse slipped in it all! DH and I couldn't help but laugh! I only had a small tear on the inside that "required" one stitch. Overall, I was very lucky how smoothly it all went. The following days were hard and we had to stay in the hospital till the following Thursday, but that is another story.

Zachary Robert was born three weeks early on February 18, 2012 at 2:42 pm, weighing 7lbs even. He is the love of my life! These last three months have been the happiest of my life. Even as I type this he is sleeping in my lap and I can't help but think how lucky I am. I love each day I get to spend with him!

  • How much longer after the birth did it take for your infection to wear off?

I was pumped full of antibiotics (I don't remember how much they gave me) over two days. Within the week I was completely better.
