For those that take their LO to church

We take Bo to church with us every week and sit in the 'cry room' with other families and their LOs. It is a great place where we can feel comfortable if he makes a sound or change is diaper. When we are in this said room we still participate in worship and prayers as if we were in the congregation. It is during this time that I feel our family growing together; it is really special to me.

My question is: my MIL has asked to have Bo during the time we usually go to church. Would you keep your tradition and tell her this would not be a good week or just go H and I? For some reason I feel guilty not bringing Bo with us, like he is missing out on something. I do realize that could be an irrational feeling stemming from a VERY strict religious upbringing. Sooo that is why I am asking you ladies... Is it okay to leave the babe at home while H and I go to church?

we don't go to church much but i don't think i would be comfortable not bringing Q with us when we do go. It is family time and something I want him to grow up with.

Plus, Q loves all the singing at our church.

This exactly! I know he is only 8 months, but I know the stimulation of the environment is great for his development. I feel bad NOT taking him. Which is kinda sad that I obviously feel a church environment can facilitate his growth more than his g-ma...hmmm??? This place is better than therapy!

  • If going to church is an important family tradition for you, I would say no. She can take him another time.

  • A and I go to church together - it's part of our "us time" and FI and I are going to continue that idea, with Sunday being the family day. We can go see friends, or other family, but the three of us are sticking together that day.

Perhaps you could invite MIL along with you to church? Just explain that it's a family tradition, but she's more than welcome to be part of the family gathering? Just an idea.

  • We bring Ry to church with us too and she LOVES it. The music is obviously what she likes most but as she grows she'll appreciate the whole experience. Eventually we'll put her in the little Kids Zone (Sunday School), but for now she is fine with us. I think MIL can take him another time. :-)

I like the idea of inviting her to your church, or just bringing him along and hoping for the best!

FWIW B comes with us and during the sermon she usually heads over to the daycare because she doesn't like it being so quiet and usually starts babbling right around then.  She loves the singing and such though so we keep her with us for most of it.

    All of this.

    E loves the music too.

  • We bring Lucy to church with us, but we've left her in the nursery the last several months.  She does great in there and it's good for her to be around the other babies/toddlers.  Even though we don't keep her in the service with us, I still don't like to go to church without her.  If it were me, I'd tell MIL to please take him another time.

  • Oh no.  We go to church as a family.

Well actually, DH brings Augie while I'm sitting at the piano because I'm the music director at our church.

  • Thank you ladies for all of your input. For something so simple I, of course, over thought it. I think she can see him a different day :)

Oh no, for me, church is family time.  J goes with us, period.  If he's sick (like, we couldn't go on Mother's Day because he was sick), I would consider it. But otherwise, nope, he goes.

Maybe she can take him after church, and you and DH can go to brunch or something?
