Homebirth Mamas

Did you write a birth plan?  If so, what kinds of things did you put in it?

 Thanks!

Re: Homebirth Mamas

  • We aren't doing one. I think everything we want is standard practice for our MWs... Daddy will announce the gender, eye ointment will be based on delivery, skin to skin, and saving placenta. I agree with PP - if we are in a transfer situation, that is something we really can't plan for and my MWs would be going with me anyway.

  • We didn't.

  • Nope.  Everything I wanted was the norm at a homebirth.

  • My MW has a standard birth plan for me to fill out/check thing off.  It's really, I think, so they can get an idea of how my desires match their standard protocols, especially WRT newborn procedures (eye ointment, PKU, etc).  I won't be writing a separate plan or anything.  If you're interested, I can come back later (when at home) and tell you what sorts of things are in it more specifically. :)

  • I didn't. Most of the things I wanted were standard practice for my midwife (immediate skin-to-skin, breastfeeding, freedom to move positions, etc etc etc). The few things that were more specific to my situation didn't necessitate a written birth plan, just a conversation with the midwife who made notes in my file.

  • If you would like to. I'm not writing one, I just don't think it's necessary. Being a home birth there won't be any meds or drugs as a given. As for newborn procedures we already spoke about that.

  • I wrote a birth plan because I was originally going to deliver in a hospital. When we switched to our midwife I did show her my birth plan. Pretty much everything on my plan was standard with my midwife.
I think it's not a bad idea to keep a birth plan around just in case you need to be transfered to a hospital. If that happens to me, my midwife will go to the hospital too and will be my advocate. But, I still think it's good to have everything written down so there isn't any miscommunications.

  • Thanks!  I had a feeling that if you plan to have a homebirth, you've probably interviewed at least a few MWs to find one that jives with your beliefs and wishes.

One of the things I have in my contract (doula) is that I help writing birth plans.  I don't have any clients who are planning a HB yet, but I wanted to have a little insight if I should even suggest a birth plan.

  • It's been almost 3 years so I don't remember all the details, but we did write a birth plan.  We did it for our Bradley class, but also wanted to have one in case of a transfer to the hospital.  We also did go over it with our midwife and a copy of it was put in our file.  I was confident that what we wanted was standard practice with our MW, but if we ended up at the hospital with doctors/nurses that never met us, I wanted to have our plan available for them to review.  I think we used this template which was easy...
