searching for a house to rent-vent

Were looking for a cheaper place to live that accepts two dogs.  Im convinced that this is almost nearly impossible.  I've been looking for about a week and every time I think I've found something perfect, they drop the "$300 per pet deposit" on us.  I totally understand as a landlord wanting to keep the house nice but...omg. We don't have a ton of money to throw around.  If we find the right place we could save nearly $300/month.

I did find one place that was awesome, I called to get directions and the guy said he just showed it and liked the people so he wanted them to rent it.  DH isn't very helpful either, he doesn't want to move because its work we have to do and finding a place is all up to me.  I am still determined and looking, but the other half of me just wants to give up and suck it up.  But the idea that we could be saving $ and we're not drives my frugal side insane.  Sorry, rant over :/

  • If you could save $300 a month then take the place with the $300 pet deposit and you have made it up in a month. Most places will have a pet deposit.

  • I feel your pain, trying to rent in the San Francisco area is NUTS and moving is really expensive so, what helped me that last time was calculating the costs of moving and if that justified moving from our current place that just increased our rent.

Movers, supplies to move, new deposit (higher than our current one) plus pet deposit, turning on utilities/services (lots of deposits out here), the mandatory maid-service and flea-removal service costs (required when moving out of our current place). That amount divided over 3 years (the lease term we were going to sign on a new house) was A LOT higher than the amount of our current rent increase amount. So, moving was not worth it for us!

Could you do the same calculation?

Would saving $300/month by moving to a smaller place cost LESS than what it would cost to move?

Good luck! Moving is never cheap :(

  • We are currently looking for a nice rental that will take a pet; being military we have dealt with the rental issue quite often.  It gets frustrating finding something nice that will take a pet.  I completely understand it from the landlords point of view but it gets frustrating.  $300 is pretty normal from what I have seen.

    Good luck finding a house!

  • Try craigslist and also for moving boxes, check out Home Depot. It's much cheaper than buying from Storage places/Uhaul.

We are looking for a rental too.  We don't have pets, but finding a decent, nice place is next to impossible here.

Most rentals are crap-holes, unless you wanna pay at minimum $1500/month + all utilities and security deposit.

It is super frustrating and kind of depressing.

We had a lot of issues when we were looking also.  Most rentals seemed to not be very well maintained at all and didnt even have minimum upgrades.  When we walked into the one we live it and it was clean and upkept we took it on the spot out of relief.  We seriously didn't even look past that to anything else.  We saw bathrooms with mirrors you couldn't even see in because they were so old and worn, kitchens with avocado green 1950s appliances, nasty smelly carpet, one place with a backyard completely full of junk with no indications that the owner planned on moving it, etc. etc.

You aren't going to avoid a pet deposit.  I've found that you are lucky to find a place that's decent and will take pets at all, deposit or not.
