I know there are a lot of ladies here looking for just about anything at this point. I was not dialated at all and my cervix was still posterior on wednesday morning. I asked my dr what, if anything, I could do to help things along. He is very old school and to the book, so I was expecting a "nope. Nothing you can do, it will happen when it happens" kind of answer. Surprisingly, he said he really reccomends pumping to release the body's natural pitocin. He told me to pump each side for 15 minutes, an hour apart. He did say it can take many times to get it started but he sees good results usually. I was concerned about wasting my colostrum, but he assured me that my body will know what to make for baby. I was already having real contractions during the second round, and who knows if it is related or not, but I did finally lose my mucus plug when I got up this morning! Crossing my fingers for some sort of dilation at my check tomorrow! Anyway, just wanted to share what my dr told me to help things along as I know many of us are at the point of trying anything!
Re: Wanted share the one and only home induction my dr suggested...
Also known as nipple stimulation. You can do it by hand as well... I tried it and nada. However last week I was 1cm dilated and no effacement and then this week I was 1cm dilated and 60% effaced. Coincidence? Who knows...
My OB said the same thing about pumping. But my doula disagrees and recommends it. We'll see how late I go, I may just try it anyway!
Makes sense to try...just start slowly!
Even if you pump the colustrum your body would make more of it for the baby. You don't just produce a certain amount of colustrum and then start making milk. I'm still nursing DS1 and I am still producing colustrum. The signal for your body to change from producing colustrum to milk is the placenta detaching from the uterine lining which starts the process. The change from producing milk to colustrum will take anywhere from a couple of days, up to 10 days depending on circumstances.
Unfortunately nursing DS just causes me contractions while we're nursing and that's it.
This is not true. I've been leaking colostrum for weeks, and did so in my first two pregnancies as well, sometimes to the point where I wake up with wet spots on my shirt. No nipple stimulation or pumping at all. I've still had PLENTY of colostrum for my girls after they were born. Your body will know what it needs to do.
If contractions do not ramp up in the next 24 hours, I'm pulling out the pump!
I leaked colostrum long before giving birth. Your body will make colostrum for the appropriate amount of time pumping or not right prior to your due date...my milk didn't even come in after I had my son until over 7 days later ( total nightmare).
