Killian?

Saw Cillian in the Irish names post below, but I think here it's more common written Killian? Anyway, I actually love this name, but have a hard time giving a baby a name with the word "Kill" in it. Does the "kill" literally kill it as a name, or am I overreacting? Thoughts?

Re: Killian?

  • I've actually heard this name before, which surprises me because I'm not usually familiar with Irish names. I like it. I'm not sure about whether you should spell it with a C or K. I think the board will generally prefer whatever the traditional spelling is though. I would probably prefer it with a K just because I'm not sure I'd pronounce it right if it were spelled with a C.

imageThis is immediately what I think of.  Killian's Irish Red beer.  Delicious, but probably not what you want people thinking of when you say your baby's name?  JMO.

  • That was me who loves Cillian! I prefer with a C for two reasons...firstly because yup, it's the traditional spelling, and secondly because I don't like the 'Kill' in there. I'd like to think most people are perceptive enough to deduce that it wouldn't be pronounced Silly-ann...but if I used it I would definitely be prepared for mispronunciations.

I like it, but I prefer the Cillian spelling. Having managed a bar for several years, my mind goes straight to beer when I see the other spelling.

The more I look at it, the more I think I prefer the C spelling too. Super cute name, thanks for bringing it back on my radar!

  • I love this name! I like it spelled with a "K" better then "C."  I think Sillian when I see Cillian.

  • I like the name, and prefer it spelled with the K, but I mentioned it to my DH and he said "beer". I get it, it makes people think of beer.

Would you be interested in Kieran (alt sp. Ciaran)? That is what I came back with after Killian was shot down Smile Or possibly Kienan?

I don't mind either Killian or Cillian as a name.

I do think of the beer with Killian, but I personally wouldn't use either because my husband's name is Ian and I think it's too close (not to mention Kill+Ian as a name is kind of weird....)

  • LOVE Kieran but DH already shot it down. It's funny, I'd been so focused on "Kill" in the name that I'd totally forgotten the beer connection...

Sorry, I just can't get past the beer. That, and I have a friend who named his dog Killian. It would be a no-go for me, regardless of spelling.

I definitely don't like the Kill thing, plus it makes me think of the beer.

  • I think of the beer.

  • Our son will be named Killian (Ian for short). I'm actually very surprised, myself, that I preferred the K spelling...usually I go strictly for traditional, but I honestly just liked how it looked with a K better. It's just the more Americanized version of the name. Technically, my name is the Irish American version of a traditional Irish name, too, and I love my name. I honestly don't think of the beer anymore than I think of beer when someone says they named their child Samuel or Jack or Daniel. And as far as the first three letters spelling the word kill, if you pronounce it correctly, it doesn't really have much of an emphasis placed on it.  Its a good strong Irish name, and I think it will grow with him. Also, it's not miserably common in the US.
